The best thing to do is to plan ahead. If you know you are meeting a friend out for dinner, it’s better to eat small meals earlier, rather than to skip breakfast or lunch to “save up” for dinner. Usually if you skip previous meals that day, it’s easy to overindulge at a restaurant when you’re overly hungry. You can also use the menu on the restaurant’s web site (if they have one) to plan your order ahead of time. The Burger King website has an interactive section where you can put in a possible meal and it will give you the number of calories, as well as the fat, carb, and sodium content. You can do this yourself at www.bk.com/en/us/menu-nutrition/index.html. What should I consider when eating out? Super size and value meals often translate into overindulgence, so it’s better to stick with regular-size servings. If you get a small burger (hamburger or with cheese), and it doesn’t fill you up, get a second choice only after you’ve finished all of the food in the first round. Plain burgers and sandwiches make better selections because extra sauces, cheese, and dressings add fat, salt, and calories. Breaded chicken and fish sandwiches usually add more fat and calories than plain burgers as well. If you choose a salad, add grilled chicken and ask for the dressing on the side so that you can control the amount, which will help make the salad healthier. It is important to find out about the restaurant’s portion sizes, big portions don’t always mean great quality. It’s also important to note that just because it may seem cheaper to order a bigger size or portion, the repeated nature of doing so may catch up to you in weight and health problems gained. How do I know a high-calorie meal by its name? Understanding what you are ordering is important when going to any type of restaurant. The preparation methods listed in the following table are easy clues as to whether a menu item is a healthier option or not. If you want to choose a higher-calorie entrée, balance it with a lower-calorie side dish and/or dessert. For example, choose Fettuccine Alfredo (which is one of the higher fat/calorie dishes on the table), with fresh fruit to complete the meal instead of a breadstick. Another piece of advice: if you need help curbing a big appetite, order a salad or broth-based (not cream-based) soup right away and go easy on the dressings and dips. Marinara Fried, Deep Fried Poached Butter or Oil Marinated Roasted Meat Sauce Tomato Sauce Stuffed with Cheese Steamed Melt (Patty, Tuna) Stir-Fried Parmesan Stuffed with Vegetables Scampi Style What are the healthier food options at restaurants near campus? In Menomonie there are many different choices for restaurants, some of which are within close walking distance of the dorms and academic buildings. Listed below are healthier options offered near campus, including Burger King, Subway, Dairy Queen, and Kwik Trip. The menu will be served buffet style and will feature: Chicken Pilaf w/Orzo Au Gratin Potatoes Green Bean Casserole Veggie Toss Salad Creamy Fruit Salad Banana Bread Dinner Rolls Original Cheeseburger 400 Calories Chicken Fajita Burrito 230 calories Whopper Jr. (no mayo) 260 calories 6” Turkey Breast (no dressing) 280 calories Grilled Chicken Wrap 200 calories Fish Sandwich w/ Cheese 320 calories Apple Fries w/ Caramel 70 calories Apple Slices w/ dip 45 calories Small Vanilla Cone 230 calories Mozarella Sticks (6 pieces) 100 calories Garden Salad (w/ Fat Free Ranch) 90 calories Minestrone Soup 90 calories Side Salad (w/ Fat Free Italian) 40 calories Chicken Noodle Soup 90 calories Most foods offered at any establishment are just fine in moderation (about once or twice a week or less).
