a FAW damage was rated based on a visual rating scale of 1-9; 1=no damage, and 9= complete defoliation; The fall armyworm damage was rated on 7 and 14 d after the artificial infestation
with at least 20 neonate larvae
b The corn earworm damage was assessed using artificial infestation as well. The corn ears with fresh silk at flowering time were infested with 2-5 corn earworm eggs. The eggs were
suspended in 0.2% agar solution, and applied on the fresh silk using a soap dispenser. The corn earworm damage was assessed at pre-harvest.
CEW resistance was rated besed on CEW damage, husk tightness and husk extension; CEW damage was rated by worm penetration into the cob (cm);
Husk tightness was rated 3 weeks after flowering with a scale of 1-5; 1=very loose husk and 5= very tight husk; Husk extension is measured at pre-harvest with the length (cm) of husk above the
tip of the cob.
