He led the Jayhawks to a 5th place Regional finish last season going 11-8 under his guidance. Coach Guzman has been with the program a total of 13 years dating back to 2003, assisting in over 275 Jayhawk victories. His duties have varied over the years from an Associate Head Coach, Assistant Coach, Hitting Coach, and also being in charge of a majority of responsibilities within the program during that time. Photo Not Available He was born and raised in Muskegon, Mi. where he graduated from Oakridge High school playing basketball and baseball. He then attended Jordan College, and Muskegon Community College. Greg has spoken at several camps and clinics over the years, and is a member of the M.H.S.B.C.A., and A.B.C.A. He also is employed as the director of operations for the West Michigan Baseball Academy, as well as a personal hitting instructor. Coach Guzman resides in Muskegon with his 3 year old daughter, Avyella Guzman. Coach’s Season Outlook - This year’s team has the talent to accomplish some great feats, including the conference, and regional championships! This will only occur if we continue to bond as a team, get better in our mental game, play with enthusiasm, and pay close attention to the details and intricacies of the game. If all goes as planned, look for us to finish near the top of the conference, qualify for Regionals, and maybe more! It should be a great season! 4 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball Baseball Assistant Coach Coach Shalhoup Photo Not Available is starting his second season with the Jayhawks. Coach Shalhoup’s responsibilities for the Jayhawks consist of their Strength/Conditioning Coach, Bunting Coach, Outfield Coach, Defensive Positioning Coach, he also helps with hitters and does all the IT work. He is currently teaching a few health classes at the college and also the colleges Recreation Director. He was a baseball and football coach at Grandville High School for 6 years. He was the varsity wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator for football and worked with pitchers and outfield for the baseball team. Coach Shalhoup along with Coach Guzman coached the 16U Muskegon ChannelCats and took them to a 3rd place finish at nationals, every player on that team went on to play a college sport. Mike graduated from Grandville High School in 2005 where he played Football and Baseball for four years. In football he started as a wide receiver on varsity for 2 years where they made it to the semifinals his junior year. Both his junior and senior year his team finished in the top 50 in the country. His baseball career was highlighted when he was named first team all conference, all district, all region and first team all-state as a pitcher. In 4 years as a pitcher Mike went 31-2 and his all-state year he had a 0.86 ERA. He was also voted as the teams MVP. Mike Attended Muskegon Community College where he played on the baseball team for two years. Mike had his baseball career cut short when he was training for a Tigers tryout after his sophomore season and he tore a muscle in his rotator cuff. Mike rehabbed his shoulder but only got up to 85mph afterwards and that is where he decided to start his coaching career even though having offers still on the table to play. 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball 5 Baseball Assistant Coach, Pitching & Catching Coach Mac begins his first season at Muskegon Community College as the baseball program’s pitching and catching coach. MacKinnon also guides the Jayhawks from the bench. Photo Not Available With a wealth of experience in coaching. Mac has served as an assistant pitching/hitting coach at the following universities: Wayne State 1979-1981 winning the GLIAC Championships in 1979.80. 81. Eastern Michigan 198183 winning a Mac Championship in 1982. Bowling Green 1983-86. His professional baseball coaching experience is as follows: Pitching coach for the Boise Hawks Class A team which is an Independent Affiliate from 1987-88 and a Texas Rangers scout from 2009-2015. He was also a head varsity baseball coach at East Kentwood High School from 2005-2015 winning a district title. He resides in East Kentwood with his wife of 40 years Linda who has been an elementary school teacher in East Kentwood Public School system for over 20 years. Proud father of two children daughter Kelley teacher in the Kentwood Public School system and varsity swim coach. Son Jack who played for Coach Guzman in 2010 -2011 and Siena Heights College from 2012-2014 and is now a sales representative for CEP Inc. 6 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball 2015-2016 Baseball Team #1 Ben Sweedyk Ben is the son of Roger and Rosemary Sweedyk. He graduated from Grand Rapids West Catholic High School in 2015 where he played Football, and Baseball. He earned All-conference, and All-District honors in Baseball, and the team won Districts his junior, and senior years. The Football team won backto-back State Championships his Junior and Senior years as well. After MCC he plans to attend a 4-year university, and pursue a degree in Computer Science. Ben would like to thank his parents and past coaches for encouraging his passion for Baseball. #2 Robert Spencer Robert Spencer III, son of Bob and Dania Spencer. Robert is from Brighton, MI. He attended Brighton High School graduating in 2014. He started 3 years on varsity playing shortstop. Started all games as a shortstop last year for the Jayhawks, hitting .345. He is one of three captains this year. Robert will be continuing his academic and athletic career in the fall of 2016 at Northwood University. #4 Austin Curtis Austin is the son of Jack and Vickie Curtis. He graduated from Fruitport High School in 2014 where he played Baseball and Football. He earned 3 Varsity letters for Baseball, earning All-Conference, and All-District honors in his senior year. After MCC he plans to attend a 4-year university to complete his degree in Business. 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball 7 2015-2016 Baseball Team #5 Colin Mclelland Colin is the son of Mike and Cathy McClelland, plays alongside his brother Ryan. He graduated from Brighton High School where he played Baseball and Basketball. He earned 3 All-Conference, 3 All-County, and 2 All-District honors in Baseball. After MCC he plans on Majoring in Criminal Justice. #6 Garret Bomay Garret is the son of Jerry and Jill Bomay, and has an older Sister named Rebecca and an older brother named Daniel. He graduated from Grant High School where he played Baseball, Basketball, and Football. He has also been doing Martial Arts since he was 4. He earned All-Conferences honors 3 years in a row in Football, and earned 2 All-Conference, and All-Area awards in Baseball. After MCC he plans to carry on his education at a 4-year college. #7 Ryan Beffrey Ryan is the son of Arthur and Julie Beffrey. He graduated from Bay City John Glenn High School where he played Baseball for the 2013 and 2014 #1 ranked Bobcats. After MCC Ryan plans to further his education in Criminal Justice at a University, and hopes to one day become a Police Officer. Ryan would like to thank his Parents and Grandparents for supporting him throughout his life. 8 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball 2015-2016 Baseball Team #8 Chad McClintock Chad is the son of Dan and Ann McClintock, and has three older brothers, Mitchell, Troy, and Latrell. He graduated from Charlotte High school in 2014. He played 3 years of both Varsity Baseball and Football earning All-Conference, All-District, and All-Region honors in baseball, and All-Area his junior and senior years in Football. After MCC he plans to pursue a degree in Special Education and also becoming a coach. #9 Parker Richardson Parker is the son of Bob and Lynn Richardson. He graduated from Reeths-Puffer High School where he was a Varsity Baseball starter for three years, earning All-Area, All-District, and All-Conference honors After MCC, he plans to transfer to a 4-year university to pursue a degree in Business, and continue his baseball career. #10 Greg Park Greg is the son of Charlie Park, and Tanya Holmes. He graduated from Pine River High School where he lettered for three years in Baseball, while also playing Varsity Football and Basketball. He earned All-State Honors as a pitcher in his senior year. After MCC he plans on transferring to a 4-year school to continue his education, and baseball career. 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball 9 2015-2016 Baseball Team #11 Kolbe Peller Kolbe is the son of Todd Peller and Marcy Bentgen. He graduated from Sault Ste. Marie High School where he played Baseball, Football, and Hockey. He was part of back-to-back state runner-up Hockey teams, and was named MVP in his senior year, in Baseball he earned 3 All-Conference and All-District honors with one All-Region selection, two team MVP’s and one Conference Player of the year. After MCC he plans on transferring to a four-year college to continue playing Baseball, and pursue a degree in physical therapy. #12 Ryan Fields Ryan is the son of Mike and Michelle Fields. He Graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central where he was a three year Varsity starter and also played Football. After MCC he plans to transfer to a 4-year university to continue his education and baseball career. #13 Carson Hopman Carson is the son of Robert and Kathy Hopman, and has 4 brothers: Bobby, Trevor, Zach, and Hunter. He graduated from Brighton High School where he played 3 years on the Varsity Baseball team. Carson would like to thank his family, and everyone who supported him throughout his baseball career. 10 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball 2015-2016 Baseball Team #14 Caleb Sheffer Caleb is the son of Matthew and Denise Sheffer, and has an older sister Bethany Kennedy, and a younger brother, Noel. He graduated from Reeths-Puffer High School where he was a 3 year varsity baseball player, earning All-Area and All-Conference honors. After MCC he plans on majoring in Urban Planning and Development at Michigan State University. #15 Brian Erndteman Brian is the son of Tom and Nancy Erndteman. He graduated from Mason County Central in 2014. He is a second year Jayhawk, and plans to transfer to Grand Valley State University next year, and pursue a degree in physical therapy. #16 Jordan Wahr Jordan is the son of Ron and Sherry Wahr, and has a younger brother, Nate. He graduated from Oakridge High School. He graduates from MCC after this semester, and plans to continue his education, and baseball career at a 4-year university. He plans to pursue a degree in either Sports Management, or Accounting. 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball 11 2015-2016 Baseball Team #17 Jacob Sposaro Jacob is the son of Chris and Sara Sposaro. He graduated from Kenowa Hills High School in 2015, where he was a 4 year letterman in baseball, earning 3 All-conference, and All-Area honors, and All Region his Senior year. He was also a two year letterman in Basketball. He has one younger brother named Gibson. After MCC he plans on transferring to another school to play baseball, and earn a degree in either Finance or Education. #18 Teddy Walton Teddy is the son of Fred and Brenda Walton. He graduated from Dexter High School in 2014 and earned First Team All-Conference and All-district Awards as a pitcher his senior year. After MCC he plans to transfer to a 4-year university to play baseball and pursue a degree in Accounting. #19 Jacob Szombati Jacob is the son of Joe and Kathy Szombati. He graduated from Lansing Catholic High School, where he was a 4 sport athlete, playing Varsity Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and Soccer. In Soccer he earned All-State honors as a goalkeeper his senior year, as well as All-District, and All-Region his Junior year. For baseball he earned All-District and All-Region honors in both his Junior and Senior years. 12 2015-2016 Jayhawk Baseball 2015-2016 Baseball Team #21 Mitchell Reyes Mitchell graduated from Fruitport High School in 2014, where he earned All-Regional honors his Junior year, and All-State honors in his Senior year. His mother passed away 2 years ago from cancer, he uses this as his strength to succeed in life. #23 Ethan Vosburg Ethan is the son of Greg and Colleen Vosburg. He graduated from Climax-Scotts High School in 2015. Ethan has one older brother named Mitchell. Ethan played 4 sports in High School. He played four years of Varsity Baseball earning 4 All-District, 3 All-Region, 3 All-State, and 2 League MVP honor. He also played 3 years of Varsity Football where he received 2 All-League Honors, and 2 years of Varsity Basketball, receiving 2 All-Conference awards, as well as Golf, earning All-conference, and team MVP. He plans to pursue a degree in Business. #24 Jacob Scavarda Jacob is the son of Pete and Dawn Scavarda. He graduated from Mason High School, where he played Football, and Baseball. He graduated from Kenowa Hills High School in 2012, played Football and Baseball, four year letterman in Baseball, First team All-Conference, district, area, second team All-State, (Preseason, All-State/All-American). #26 Rhett “RJ” Holwerda RJ is the son of Shane and Lori Holwerda. He Graduated from East Kentwood High School in 2014. After MCC he plans to attend a 4-year university, and pursue a degree in Business Management. #28 Zack Vitkuske Zach Vitkuske, son of Julia Vitkuske. 6’2” 200 lbs. From Brighton, MI. Played football my freshmen and senior year All Conference. Decided to pursue baseball instead of hockey my senior year of high school. He plans on attending GVSU to pursue Criminal Justice. #32 Brendan Kelly Brendan is the son of Kevin and Kathleen Kelly, and has a brother Matthew. He graduated from Grandville High School where he played Baseball, Basketball, and Football. In baseball he earned 2 All-Conference honors, and played in the John Boss All-Star game his Senior year. He graduated from Grand Haven High School, where he was named to the All-Area team in his Junior and senior year, He made the team as a Walk-on last year, and earned the Charlie Hustle award, and is one of the Team Captains this year. Ryan graduated from Brighton High School in 2013 where he earned 2 All-district, and All-Conference honors, and in his senior year he was selected to the MSHBCA All-Star game at Comerica Park. He was red shirted in 2014 at Grand Valley State, and played there the following year.
