MCC Men’s Soccer 2014-15 Match-by-Match Cuyahoga CC October 19, 2014 Final Cuyahoga CC 2 MCC ` 0 The Jayhawks dropped their final game of the season 2-0 against Cuyahoga CC on Sunday, October 19 and were eliminated from playoff contention. The Jayhawks finished the season 4-14. Sophomore Goalie Jacob Berens (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian HS) made 2 saves on 4 shots and play a solid game in net for the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks had many opportunities in the second half, but strong play from the Cuyahoga’s goalie kept the Jayhawks of the board. Lakeland CC October 18, 2014 Final MCC 3 Lakeland CC 2 The Jayhawks played at Mona Shores HS on Saturday, October 18 against Lakeland CC. The Jayhawks got the first of two need victories this weekend with a 3-2 win. Scoring for the Jayhawks were freshmen Jesus Corona (Yuriria, Guauajuato Mexico, Holland HS) with the first goal. After a Lakeland score to tie it before the half, the Jayhawks fell behind 2-1. Seconds later freshmen Chase Schuiteman (Fremont, MI/ West Michigan Christian HS) answered with a goal and evened the game 2-2. With 12 minutes remaining freshmen John Waller (Whitehall, MI/ West Michigan Christian HS) split two defenders and was hauled down inside the box. Freshmen Charlie Wick (Holland, MI/ Holland HS) stepped up and easily beat the goalie to put the Jayhawks up for good. Sophomore Goalie Jacob Berens (Grand Haven, MI/ West Michigan Christian HS) led the Jayhawks in net making 4 save on 6 shots. The Jayhawks will now take on Cuyahoga CC on Sunday, October 19 at 1:00pm in what could determine the Jayhawks playoff destiny. A win they’re in the playoffs, while a loss will end their season. The game will be played at Orchard View HS. Lake Michigan College October 15, 2014 Final Lake Michigan College 5 MCC 3 The Jayhawks suffered a tough loss to Lake Michigan College last night Wednesday, October 15 5-3 in what was a must win game for the Jayhawks. Even though MCC held a 10-9 shot advantage, the Jayhawks could not keep Lake Michigan off the board. Even with the loss the Jayhawks are still not out of playoff, because Cuyahoga CC loss last night the Jayhawks could still get in with two victories this weekend. Scoring for the Jayhawks was sophomore Jacob Kring (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS), sophomore Keith Kuharevicz (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon Catholic Central) and freshmen Adrian Breseno (Muskegon, MI/Muskegon HS). Freshman Goalkeeper Thomas Swiatek (Muskegon, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) made 10 saves on 15 shots for the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks will play this Saturday’s game at 11:00 am against Lakeland CC and Sunday’s game against Cuyahoga CC at 1:00 pm. Field location will be at Orchard View HS, not Mona Shores HS, because the field is unplayable due to weather conditions. Jackson CC October 12, 2014 Final MCC 3 Jackson CC 2 W 3-2 Today the Jayhawks kept their playoff hopes alive with a 3-2 comeback victory over the Jets from Jackson in Jackson, Mich. on Sunday, October 12. The Jets jumped on the Jayhawks getting the first two goals of the game. From that point on it was total domination by the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks got their first goal of the game off a quick restart as freshmen Charlie Wick (Holland, MI/Holland HS) quickly played a ball to freshman Chase Schuiteman (Fremont, MI/West Michigan Christian HS) who fired a shot into the far side net. The Jayhawks trailed 2-1 at half, but had all the momentum going in and coming out of halftime on fire. After a few great chances by the Jayhawks, they finally got the equalizer when freshmen John Waller (Whitehall, MI/West Michigan Christian HS) slid a great pass across the box to sophomore Jacob Kring (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS) who hit a hard shot pass the goalkeeper. Minutes later the Jayhawks capped off the comeback as freshman Brandon Edwards (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS) found freshman Emmit Mikkelson (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS) at the top of the box and ripped a shot under the goalie arms and won the game for the Jayhawks. Sophomore Goalkeeper Jacob Berens (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian HS) made 5 saves in the game and held strong with the defenders. The Jayhawks held an 8-6 shot advantage and now upped their record to 3-13. With the win the Jayhawks are now 2 points out of the last playoff spot with 3 games remaining. All three games are this week and all are home games at Mona Shores High School. Wednesday’s game on October 15 is at 4:00 pm against Lake Michigan College. Saturday, October 18 the Jayhawks play at 1:00 pm against Cuyahoga CC and Sunday at 1:00 pm against Lakeland CC. Owens CC October 5, 2014 Final Owens CC 2 MCC 1 The Jayhawks lost 2-1 to Owens CC this Sunday, October 5. Scoring for the Jayhawks was freshmen John Waller (Whitehall, MI/West Michigan Christian HS). Freshmen Thomas Sweitak (Muskegon, MI/ReethsPuffer HS) made 12 save on 14 shots. The Jayhawks were outshot 14 to 6 and still managed to keep the game close. The Jayhawks will be in action again this Sunday, October 12 in Jackson Mich. against Jackson CC. Cincinnati State Tech & CC October 4, 2014 Final Cincinnati State 2 MCC 1 The Jayhawks lost a close game to Cincinnati State Tech & CC 2-1 on Saturday, October 4. Cincinnati got two goals in a matter of 1 minute and 45 seconds to open the scoring in the second half. The Jayhawks returned the favor when sophomore Aaron Dault (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Spring HS) scored a goal off his own penalty kick. Cincinnati outshot the Jayhawks 16-12, but the Jayhawks had the better opportunities, but didn’t finish. Sophomore Jacob Berens (Grand Haven, MI/West Michigan Christian HS) was in net for the Jayhawks and made 14 saves. The Jayhawks host Owens CC next on Sunday, October 5 at 1:00pm at Mona Shores High School. Cuyahoga CC September 28, 2014 Final Cuyahoga 2 MCC 0 The Jayhawks lost 2-0 in Parma, Ohio to Cuyahoga CC. Lakeland CC September 27, 2014 Final MCC 1 Lakeland 0 The Jayhawks played in Kirkland, Mich. to earn their second straight victory in regional play with a 1-0 victory over Lakeland CC on Saturday, September 27. Scoring for the Jayhawks was freshmen Jesus Corona (Yuriria, Guauajuato, Mexico/Holland HS). Corona hit a 25 yard bender which found the far side of the net. Setting up Corona was freshmen Brandon Edwards (Muskegon, MI/Orchard View HS) and freshmen Emmit Mikkelson (Whitehall, MI/Whitehall HS) with a nice one-two combo which ended up on Corona’s favorite right foot. Sophomore Jacob Berens (Grand Haven, MI/Western Michigan Christian HS) got the shutout in the net. The Jayhawks defense did a great job keeping Lakeland away from the goal. The Jayhawks held a 15-1 shot advantage. The Jayhawks will play Cuyahoga CC in Parma, Ohio on Sunday, September 28. Jackson CC September 24, 2014 Final MCC 2 Jackson 1 MCC won its first match of the season with a 2-1 decision over visiting Jackson CC.
