NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER 2013 The Story of Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Rules 1) Give Thanks! What are you really thankful for? 2) Everyone be safe traveling! 3) Don’t worry about your diet. November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim storyteller Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Important Safety and Energy Tips for November The weather is changing and colder months are on their way! Please be aware that when you turn on your heaters there may be a “burning” smell. This happens because dust settles on the coils of the furnace throughout the year and is burnt off when the heater is activated for the first time from its summer sleep. The smell may linger for an hour; this is normal. Energy Savers Tip of the Month: Contrary to belief, turning off your heater when leaving your apartment on a daily basis actually causes higher electricity bills. When you come back home, your apartment has dropped in temperature and your furnace has to work multiple times harder to warm up your space. Keep your heater on “auto” (not “on”) and at a consistent comfortable temperature. You will save energy AND your bank account. The Sunflower Showdown is fast approaching!
