Ashmore K-2 Update
Kindergarten: 5 year old Taya Newkurk is a
recent kindergartener at Ashmore School. So
far in her math class, they are learning how to
count using the calendar dates. In reading
they are improving how to read by listening
and reading books about bugs birds and dinosaurs!
1st grade: In Mrs. Snyder’s first grades class at
Ashmore School the students have been
working on a lot! In first grade reading class
students are working on txt to world connections. This is where the teacher will read the
students a book, the students will then make a
connection from the book to something that’s
happening in the actual world. In Mrs.
Snyder’s first grade writing class, have been
writing about their 5 senses. The students
have to ask themselves, what do I smell during Halloween time? What do I hear? What do
I taste? Etc. in science class the students
recently did a unit on pumpkins. For example
the teacher ask the students do you think this
pumpkin sinks or float? The students then ask
themselves this question… the students then
got to test their theory…. Pumpkins float! Another question that the students mat be asked
during the pumpkin unit in science, is how
many seeds are in a pumpkin!? Students later
found out that there is about 200 seeds in a
fairly large pumpkin.

3rd and 4th grade at Ashmore
The third and fourth graders at Ashmore Elementary School are busy learning!
The third graders are mastering 3 digit subtraction and writing about things they did over the
weekend. In Social Studies, they are learning about the Titanic. “Our teacher just finished reading our whole class Charlotte’s Web!” said Blair Ritchey, a student in Ms. Walker’s class.
The fourth graders recently learned about reading predictions, and they will soon start inferences. The students are starting to grasp division. They are also learning about and memorizing
states and capitals.
All students at Ashmore are preparing for the Christmas Program in music class. All the kids will
sing “Jingle Bell Rock” together and the third and fourth graders are playing “Carol
of the Bells” on xylophones and recorders. It sounds like they are having fun!

Kindergarten at Mark Twain
The kindergarteners at
Mark Twain had a spooktacular time this October
and are eagerly preparing for the holiday season. In Mrs. Phipps’ class, the students labeled the parts of pumpkins, practiced reading
and writing
consonant-vowel-consonant
words, found items on a grocery list and created grocery lists in their play grocery store and
matched different kinds of fabrics, and compared what different types of fabrics felt like
when they were wet. The students also
played a fun game that helped them identify
numbers. A seed was hidden behind a pumpkin with a certain number on it. Mrs. Phipps
Ashmore & Mark Twain
then told the students what number the seed
was behind and the students had to find that
number. In Mrs. Oakley’s class, the students
made candy corn fall trees and shirts for their
Thanksgiving feast. The students also enjoyed learning to write sentences in their journals and taking books home to read. They
practiced their sight words and learned about
Native Americans. In Mrs. Bily’s class, the
students made Who Am I ghost books. They
also practiced writing in their journals, reading
books, and counting to 60. The kindergarteners in every homeroom are learning important
life skills like patience and sharing. In Mrs.
White’s art class, the students made mummies for Halloween and got to choose the
color of their mummy’s wrappings. The students have started to make ornaments for
Holiday Magic at Old Main for Christmas. Old
Main will be open to see the students’ ornaments on December 14, 2015, from 5:00 p.m.
to 7:00 p.m. Mark Twain had a Fall Frolic for
its students as their monthly reward for good
behavior. At the rewards party, the kindergarteners went on a pumpkin hunt, were read a
story, and had a snack. When asked what
they enjoy most about kindergarten, the students said that they like coloring, reading,
P.E., recess, playtime, writing, free
time, and lunch.
