Puritan and Rationalist Text Reformulation Rather than testing your memorization of writing characteristics, authors, and contents, you will demonstrate your understanding of the Puritan and Rationalist literary periods through text reformulation. You will create 2 reformulated texts—1 for the Puritan literary style, and 1 for the Rationalist literary style Puritan Literary Style (30 points, 2 points per required reference plus 2 points per entry)—you will create a diary in which you are a Puritan. Your diary needs to incorporate references to all of the Puritan pieces read/presented in class. You will need to write a minimum of 5 entries that include in the following: o 4 references to or direct quotes from “Of Plymouth Plantation” o 2 references to or direct quotes from Mary Rowlandson and her “Narrative of the Captivity” o 1 reference to or direct quote from Anne Bradstreet and one of her poems o 2 references to or direct quotes from events and people in “Salem Village” o 1 reference to or direct quote from Jonathan Edwards and “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” Rationalist Literary Style (30 points, 2 points per required element)—you will create a poster-sized advertisement for the Revolutionary War. (I will provide you with an 11 x 17 piece of construction paper.) This advertisement needs to focus on persuasion and needs to include both emotional and logical appeals. o 2 direct quotes from Benjamin Franklin (from “Arriving at Moral Perfection” and/or “Poor Richard’s Almanac Aphorisms”) o A minimum of 4 references to or direct quotes from Henry’s “Speech to Virginia Convention” o A minimum of 4 references to or direct quotes from Paine’s “Crisis, Number 1” o At least one illustration o Of the references/direct quotes, at least 2 must be logical appeals o Of the references/direct quotes, at least 2 must be emotional appeals You will have 2 days in the computer lab although neither assignment needs to be typed. Final projects are due by Thursday, October 7th.
