22nd Annual Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Unit Title - Vis Arbitration Moot - LAW5151) Introduction Applications are invited from students wishing to apply for the Vis Moot team. This is also an application form to undertake the unit Vis Arbitration Moot as part of the preparation for the Moots in Vienna and possibly Hong Kong. Successful applicants may enrol in the Vis Arbitration Moot unit, LAW5151. This is a 6 point unit. Note: You may apply for the moot even if you do not wish to undertake the unit. Students who are still in their final year this year are thus eligible to compete in next March and April’s competitions. There will be a tight quota on the unit. It is hoped that we can accept 6 students, dependent on funding. Following review of applications, those applicants shortlisted will be invited to a short informal interview. Initial applications are required by 3 September 2014 by 6pm. Final year students If you are in your final year and would wish to drop a unit if selected, please contact me urgently to see if I can offer you an early indication before the time elapses for withdrawal without penalty. Jessup applicants Coaches of the Vis and Jessup teams are agreed that we are happy for students to apply for both, although you can only do one. If you are applying for both, please let both coaches know this in your application, and indicate your preference. If you are worthy of both, you preference would be respected, although timing is an issue. Contact Hours The unit will not entail a formal regular lecture program but students should operate on the assumption that there will be on average one lengthy group meeting per week, either in the evening or weekends, on or off campus plus significant individual and sub-group work. Obviously the timing of travel to attend the competition in Vienna and possibly Hong Kong may have an impact on students’ availability for assessments, including in particular, JD exams, that are set in the MarchApril period, and students in this position should ensure they discuss this with me before accepting a position on the team. Assessment Students who are successful in their application and who are also enrolling in the unit will be consulted about assessment. A significant portion of the assessment will be based on Mooting performance. In addition there will be a written component. This will involve a collective mark in relation to the quality of the memoranda prepared as part of the Moot. Selection Criteria The Vis Moot is intended to be a group learning experience, developing communication, research, collegial and advocacy skills in a legal context dealing with arbitration, contract, conflicts of laws and comparative laws. As such there is no single criterion or hierarchy of criteria that guides the selection process. Ideally, the final group will have a mix of talents and attributes so that it will be competent, efficient and harmonious. Thus in putting together your application, do not feel constrained by the headings on this form, but instead present information about all your attributes and experiences that you think would be useful in a team research, writing and advocacy training environment. Use it as practice for job applications after graduating. Funding Faculty support has not yet been finalised. Applicants will need to understand that there will be some residual individual contribution. 22nd Annual Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Unit Title - Vis Arbitration Moot - LAW5151) Please return the completed application form and its attachments by to: Student Services Office Faculty of Law, PO Box 12 Monash University, Clayton VIC 3800 Applications are required by 3 September 2014, 6pm. I am looking for anything that shows organisational ability, ability to work well in groups, meet tight deadlines, communicate well orally and in writing, foreign language skills, research skills etc. (Feel free to attach information if the space provided is insufficient.) ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Other summer commitments A very important part of the program is the group work where we workshop ideas. It is always very difficult to get a large group all together at one time. It is natural for students to engage in paid work, including summer clerkships, take some vacation and have other honorary commitments. Nevertheless, a relevant factor in making the final selection may be whether a particular applicant is able to make a sufficient commitment, including being available at common meeting times. Thus in the following section could you indicate particular times and dates where you could not attend group meetings. Please provide the details of major time commitments such as summer clerkships, regular employment and planned vacations. NB: Continuance in the program will be dependent on properly meeting the time commitments made and you are expected to make total disclosure in this section. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Applicant’s declaration I declare that the information provided on this form and the information given to support my application is correct and complete.
