Fans Hate To See McCarney Go
Students React To Coach's Departure
AMES, Iowa -- Fans said they love Iowa State University's former head
football coach Dan McCarney, but they don't like losing.
During a news conference Wednesday night, McCarney got a standing ovation
from his coaches, players and co-workers, and many found it hard not to cry.
He talked about the good times, and the memories that make him proud during
the best 12 years of his life.
"Nobody laughs at Iowa State anymore when we line up play against Iowa. It's a
great rivalry in college football, and I'll really be proud of that," McCarney said.
McCarney fought back tears as he announced his resignation. It didn't take long
for word to spread across the campus he loved so well.
"I'm on the dance team, so we're out there cheering the whole time, and I think
it's unfortunate. I'd like to see him stay," said ISU student Crysten Glawe.
"I think McCarney is a good coach. All his players respect him. Yeah, the season
wasn't that (good), but he's brought a lot of bowl championships to this game. I
think everyone will miss him overall," ISU student Collin Reuter said.
What makes McCarney's departure so tough is that while people seem to really
like the man, they don't like losing.
"You know he got into to bowl games and stuff like that, but it just seemed like he
always, no matter what he does -- he can't get the wins to come with them," said
ISU Dustin Streff.
"Now we need a coach that's going to, maybe, bring us up another level, where
he kind of maxed out what he can do. I think it would be kind of nice to see us
win something," said ISU student Andrew Petkoff.
"From the bottom of my heart, I know I've got peace with my decision and I have
no regrets," McCarney said.
Fans also want to know who the next ISU Football coach might be.
