Parenting seminars start with personal finance
By Mary Louise Speer
Usually kids head off to school with mom and dad telling them to learn as much
as possible.
Students and parents are encouraged to sign up for Parent University and get an
overview on the art of managing personal finances. Monday night’s presentation
on the Cost of Life is the opening entree in a series of six, and families from
Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley school districts are invited to attend.
“This is the first year for Parent University, and we’ve chosen topics we think will
have high interest. This is an opportunity for parents and students to attend
together,” said Tammy Chelf, the School-to-Work coordinator for the Business
and Education Partnership.
The seminar will help teens and possibly parents understand more about the
importance of staying on budget, she said. The presenter is Phyllis Zalenski of
Marion, Iowa, a family resource management expert with the Iowa State
University Extension.
Upcoming programs are:
Oct. 2: Workforce trends and choosing a career
Nov. 6: Choosing a college and applying for financial Aid
March 19: “Know What to Say” — Talking to your kids about sex, held at
Bettendorf High School’s auditorium
April 23: Diversity
May 21: Internet blogging
