Des Moines Register 08-04-06 Dateline Iowa REGISTER STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES Hybrid school bus will be used in district Nevada — The Nevada school district will test-drive a hybrid school bus that researchers say will get 40 percent better mileage and cut emissions in half. The Sigourney school district will also get one of the buses, about 19 of which will be used across the country. Dennis Kroeger, an Iowa State University transportation research specialist, hopes the buses will be on the street late this year. The hybrid vehicles cost about $200,000 each, about $60,000 of which will comes from the school districts. State grants will pay for the rest. Hybrid school buses will also be used in Arkansas, California, Florida, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington.
