If you have already applied for and/or are receiving financial aid, fill out a "Study Abroad Notification" form available from the Financial Aid Office or at www.uwstout.edu/finaid/forms/index.htm. 2. If you have not applied for financial aid, file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA should be completed at least three months prior to the term in which you plan to participate in a study abroad. The Financial Aid Office may request additional material from you in order to complete your application for financial aid. 3. You are considered for financial aid based on the number of credits for which you are enrolled. If you are not carrying UW-Stout credits or credits on a consortium (see 8 below), you are not eligible for aid. Full-time status will allow consideration for all aid programs except student employment and non-resident tuition waivers. 4. The amount of financial aid you may apply for or you may be considered for can not exceed the standard program costs of your study abroad program. Any increased eligibility for study abroad programs is limited to student or parent loans. The amount of increase in eligibility for a loan program is also contingent on your borrowing limits and the availability of loan funding. 5. After you complete the "Study Abroad Notification" and when your financial aid file is complete, you will receive a Financial Aid Award letter listing any increases to your financial aid (if you are eligible for an increase due to your study abroad). If you have questions or need to discuss additional funding options contact the Financial Aid Office by calling 715.232.1363, or email us at finaid@uwstout.edu. 6. Financial aid for the term you are studying abroad is disbursed to campus at the start of UW-Stout’s term, not your departure date. Plan accordingly! 7. Review the preference you chose for receiving financial aid refunds. Log-in at www.uwstoutone.com and look under the tab labeled Profile, then financial aid refund. 8. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the next academic year should be filed as soon after January 1 as possible. If you will be overseas second semester you should make arrangements to complete your application so you are not denied financial aid for the following year. 9. If you are attending another school for a study abroad, you may encounter additional hurdles in the financial aid process. Financial aid is only available to "degree seeking" students, so if you are only visiting another college for the purpose of a study abroad, that college cannot offer you aid. You can only get financial aid from the college you intend to get your degree from. UW-Stout may be able to offer you financial aid for a study abroad through another UW school for a study abroad if a consortium agreement is negotiated. This requires substantial communication effort between the two schools. Remember to apply well in advance of your study abroad, and communicate with the Financial Aid Office so you can be prepared before you leave and truly enjoy your study abroad experience.
