CITY PARKS INTEGRATED
ARBOR MONTH CELEBRATIONS
1-30 September 2009
“Plant a tree – save our planet”
In September 2009 the City Parks Department will for the second time be coordinating integrated Arbor Month celebrations in the Community
Services Directorate. The Department is once again joining forces with the Library and Information Services as well as Sport, Amenities and
Recreation to create awareness of the importance of planting trees. City of Cape Town libraries will display appropriate literature, distribute leaflets
and put up posters for Arbor Month. Sport, Amenities and Recreation will work with the City Parks staff to teach youth and children about the
importance of trees. This programme will also include clean-up campaigns. Other departments who have made significant contributions towards
the Arbor Month celebrations include the Communication and the Environmental Resource Management Department.
Objectives
• To celebrate Arbor Month in an integrated fashion
• To use the Arbor Month project to leverage benefits for the 2010 Soccer World Cup event, where feasible
• To investigate and implement partnerships and volunteer programmes
• To develop, enhance and conserve the city’s green public open spaces for present and future generations
• To promote both passive and active leisure activities
• To provide opportunities for community involvement and ownership of parks and public facilities
• To provide safe green spaces where children can partake in imaginative and free play
• To train staff, build capacity and create awareness of the importance of the green environment
• To educate and build awareness amongst the communities of the importance of the green environment, thereby
creating economic and environmental opportunities
NEW PARTNERSHIPS
This year, City Parks has included new international initiatives to strengthen the programme, and to become part of
a global network. The Arbor Month programme will therefore include the following initiatives that are aligned with
Environment Online (ENO) and World Parks Day.
THIS CITY WORKS FOR YOU
ENVIRONMENT ONLINE (ENO)
ENO is a global virtual school for sustainable development. The ENO programme which started in 2004, will organise a global tree-planting day
on Monday 21 September 2009. The planting of trees symbolises hope and the continuity of life. The campaign increases awareness of climate
change and the variety of ecosystems on earth.. . Last year, the event inspired children at 2 000 schools in 122 countries to accept the challenge.
Altogether 300 000 trees were put into the ground as part of the tree-planting drive.
ENO Tree-planting Day is a practical way of enhancing environmental and global education. It connects children all over the world, and encourages
them to focus on environmental issues.
The planting of trees will take place everywhere at noon local time. The first to start is Tonga in Oceania, and the last area to participate will be
Samoa Islands. The world has taken a remarkable step towards a more ecological way of life. The tree planting will not be an isolated event, but
the trees will be cared for, and their growth and development will be monitored as well.
WORLD PARKS DAY
World Parks Day is organised by Parks for Life, an international initiative created by the International Urban Parks and Green Space Alliance
(IUPGSA). World Parks Day takes place on Saturday 19 September 2009, and is an opportunity to celebrate our parks and green spaces in order to:
• communicate the critical importance of parks in a global context;
• promote best practice by learning from other parks services; and
• encourage people to enjoy their local parks, and appreciate the importance of green space.
The City of Cape Town and the Western Cape branch of the Institute of Environment and Recreation Management (IERM) will join Stellenbosch
Municipality in celebrating the first Western Cape World Parks Day on 24 September 2009.
