Lynx XC teams both fourth at Algona Invite
By Troy Banning — DFJ Sports Editor
ALGONA — Fourth was the place
to be for the Webster City cross
country teams on Tuesday at the
Algona Invitational.
The Lynx girls' and boys' squads
both finished in the No. 4 spot
amidst a grueling field that
featured seven ranked teams in
the two races.
With Brandon Hicok back in the
lineup for the first time this
season, Webster City's boys'
team — ranked 13th in Class 3A
in the latest poll by the Iowa
Association of Track Coaches —
tallied 99 points, nipping North
Central Conference rival and 2A
fourth-ranked Eagle Grove by two
points for that fourth spot.
But it's another NCC squad that
caught Lynx head coach Tony
Bussan's eye.

GOOD TIME TO SHINE: Erin Hunt, front, had what
Lynx coach Tony Bussan called the best race of her
career on Tuesday at the Algona Invite. Above she
heads up a small incline, followed closely by
teammate Caitlyn Finucan.
Algona finished in the runner-up slot with 80 points, just eight in back of
3A fourth-ranked and meet champion Spirit Lake Park. Spencer (3A No.
12) finished third with 84.
"We competed very well against a high quality field," Bussan said. "We
accomplished a goal by defeating Eagle Grove. The conference meet
shapes up to be a tight battle between Algona, ourselves and Eagle
Grove."
Algona rode the strength of its top two runners — Ryan McMahon and
Chad Rutledge — who claimed the top two individual spots. McMahon, a
freshman, won his fifth title in as many outings this fall in 16 minutes 17
seconds, two seconds ahead of Rutledge.
Hicok placed 22nd in 17:51 in his return.

Ben Lambert led Webster City with a fifth-place showing in 16:56. Ethan
Barnes wasn't too far behind in ninth, as he crossed the finish line in
17:17.
"Ben and Ethan had exceptional races against some of the very best
(runners) in the state," Bussan said.
Jesse Ogg, the Lynx regular No. 1 competitor, struggled with a side stitch
midway through the race and dropped back to 15th in 17:30. Alex Lamp
closed out Webster City's scoring five by taking the 48th spot in 19:14.
Teammate Matt Severe was only five seconds behind.

Webster City's girls' crew didn't just have to deal with a quality field of
Iowa runners, but also a standout program from Minnesota.
Fairmont crossed the border to dominate the girls' meet by tallying just 36
points. Spirit Lake Park — No. 4 in 3A — was well back in second with
61. Estherville-Lincoln Central/Armstrong-Ringsted (3A No. 3) was next
with 75, followed by the 3A 14th-ranked Lynx with 112.
Spencer, No. 13 in the latest 3A poll, settled for fifth with 122.

"Spirit Lake Park is the best girls' team from Iowa we have faced to this
point and Estherville-Lincoln Central is also very sound," Bussan said.
"We gave a good account of ourselves (by) nipping a ranked Spencer
squad."
Sophomore Mikaela Pruismann led the charge once again for the Lynx by
placing seventh in 16:24. Sarah Perin and Breanne Wagner also medaled
with 16th- and 22nd-place finishes, respectively.
Perin crossed the finish line in 16:45, 14 seconds ahead of Wagner.
Bussan couldn't help but smile following the performance by Erin Hunt,
another sophomore. She stepped up into the No. 4 role and placed 29th
in 17:15.
"Erin had, by far, her best race of her career and stepped forward when
we needed her," Bussan said.
Paige Bonjour accounted for Webster City's fifth spot. The junior was
32nd in 17:54.
