Ogg, Lambert in top 10; WC boys sixth at own invite
Algona freshman McMahon makes big statement with gold medal
runBy Troy Banning — DFJ Sports Editor
WEBSTER CITY — Jesse Ogg
has his sights set on owning
North
Central
Conference
bragging rights this fall. But it
looks like he will have a fight
on his hands.
That fight will come in the form
of Algona freshman sensation
Ryan McMahon, who put the
rest of the conference runners
on notice on Tuesday at the
Lynx Invitational during the
opening day of the season.
McMahon, the state middle
school champion a season
ago, led for much of the race
and then utilized a strong kick
over the final 200 meters to
hold on and win the individual
title.

STICKING TOGETHER: Webster City’s Jesse Ogg
(on right) and Prairie Valley’s Aaron Vosberg race
stride for stride on Tuesday. Vosberg placed
second, Ogg fourth at the Lynx Invite.
McMahon crossed in 17
minutes 2 seconds, one
second ahead of silver medalist Aaron Vosberg of Prairie Valley.
Boone's Matt Stone claimed bronze in 17:05.
Ogg, Webster City's senior leader, settled for fourth in 17:16. He
watched as McMahon and Stone took off during the race's first mile, but
he could never close the gap.
Still, Lynx head coach Tony Bussan says Ogg shouldn't be worried at
this early stage. In fact, the coach was quite upbeat, noting Ogg
decimated his 2006 Lynx Invite finishing time by 1:13.
"I thought Jesse ran a real strong race, a lot stronger than a year ago,"
Bussan said. "He's just going to get better and better.

"(McMahon) went out and made a statement. I told him after the race
that I was glad his first varsity race was on our course because he's
only going to get better."
Webster City junior Ben Lambert joined Ogg in the top 10. Lambert
cruised home in 17:46 to take seventh, helping the Lynx — No. 8 in the
first Class 3A poll — to a sixth-place result.

Boone — No. 15 in 4A — held off Fort Dodge by three points to win the
team title with 79 points. Eagle Grove, third-ranked in 2A, and St.
Edmond both tallied 98, but the Eagles inched ahead on the tiebreaker.
The same scenario played out with Algona and Webster City — both
with 108 — with the Bulldogs gaining the upper-hand.
A sixth-place finish is hardly anything to write home about for a program
that routinely contends for meet titles. But Bussan was anything but
displeased, noting he had three varsity rookies in his lineup.
"I'm real pleased because, given our situation, we could have been less
competitive than we were," he said. "We became a good cross country
team because we took adversity and turned it into a positive."
Ethan Barnes placed 14th for the Lynx in 18:38. Matt Severe was 41st
in 20:17 and one of the rookies, freshman Alex Lamp, was on Severe's
shoulder in 42nd, just one second back.
Lamp was slated to compete for Webster City's junior varsity team until
just two days ago. But he was called up and Bussan couldn't have been
happier with how he performed.
"Alex stepped up and ran something far and beyond what I thought he
could," Bussan said. "He battled throughout and never backed down
from anybody. So I'm just very proud of his effort."
Adam Klein and Mason Hedeen finished 58th and 59th — both in 21:08
— in their first varsity races for the Lynx.
The boys' JV race was postponed due to lightning that entered the area
just as the varsity race was concluding. The clouds opened up and
dropped buckets of rain just as fans were exiting the course.
