People are researching even when they do not mean to do it. Younger people are being required to do more research. Why do we teach research? ▪To submit an answer to this question, enter the access code at the website listed below. As a researcher you seek answers to questions of great interest to you. Your research problem could be aesthetic, social, political, scientific or technical. You choose the tools, gather and analyze the data .” http://research.berkeley.edu/experience.php Conceptions and Modes of Student Inquiry http://www.staffs.ac.uk/research/research_informed_teaching/pedagogic.jsp Types of Creative Research Tools ▪KWL-KWHL-KWHLAQ ▪The 5 W’s and How ▪Alphabet Research ▪Graphic Organizer Research ▪Colorful / 3D Research ▪Student-Created KWL ▪ Old faithful! This is one of the most common research tools since 1986. They have since revamped this many times, but it is a great tool to get students really thinking and excited about research. KWHL / KWHLAQ ▪ There have been many adaptations to the standard KWL chart that meet our 21st century learning needs. These are just two of the basic ones. The 5 W’s and How ▪ You would use this in gathering basic information for research. This is just another template to help you gather your information in a fun way. BRAIN BREAK!! ▪ Everybody stand up and try to participate!! ▪ I use these in class all the time to give students a break! https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=chicken+dance Alphabet ▪ This is ultimately my one of my favorite research tools because students have to really stretch their research to fill in all letters of the alphabet. ▪ What if I can’t get X, Y, Z…? Graphic Organizer ▪ There are many of these for free to meet your students’ research needs. They are very helpful in forming their thoughts instead of having them strawn all over the paper. Color / 3D ▪ This really gets students having the research literally in the palm of their hands. ▪ This will help the student stay organized and keep them engaged for a longer period of time. Let Students Create Their Own ▪ Why not? Sometimes students know what is best to make them enjoy research. ▪ DISCLAIMER: Make sure you check in with the student for a pre-meeting to discuss their ideas before sending them off to create the next big research tool. Tie Into Real Life ▪ Students always remember more information for my class if I can connect the information to their lives. ▪ Instead of just writing another paper just to have research, decide topics that can be associated with their lives. ▪ Ex. ▪ A community service project at the local soup kitchen and how their budget helps the community. (Math Research, Global Citizen, Social Studies, and many other disciplines.) ▪ A research on the Holocaust and the fashion of that time period and how the fashion affected the war (CTE, Social Studies, English, etc.) How to get students really engaged with a topic? -Have students give you a list of ideas that they may be interested in. -Try to find those interdisciplinary connections between the subject matter you want them to research and their interests. -Have fun while teaching this process… Teachers can really show how enjoyable this process is just by modeling and researching their own topic with the class. Now It’s Your Turn ▪At your area, there is a piece of sentence strip. ▪Flip it over and find a broad subject. ▪Using the resources provided and others you may think of, design a creative research template for your topic (only a little to share with your group what you came up with). Discussion ▪ How could you use today’s information to get a student really excited about research? ▪What is one thing that you would really like to implement in your classroom to make researching a more productive enjoyable measure on you and your students? Pinterest Plug ▪ This will change your life forever!
