English 354: Assignment for Week of 12-16 Nov. Due, beginning of class, complete on Tuesday 27 Nov. Note: no classes or office hours will be held from 12-16 Nov. In lieu of classes, the project below is to be completed. Choose one Western author not used in our anthology who was writing from the 1890s to 1945; choose one work by that author to discuss along the following lines: 1) Read the work and find two critical works that discuss that work (they *must* be thorough works of scholarship, not summary sources, or “wiki-type” sources). Assignments not using sound scholarship will fail as not having completed the basic ground work for this assignment. 2) Discuss one Modernist concern operating in the work *using the terms and definitions we used for Modernist concerns in class* 3) Write a summation of your research that a. discusses what the work is (story, poem, play....) b. defines what modernist concern you find in the work c. illustrates, with brief but specific examples, where that concern appears in the work Remember: we CITE whenever and however we use a source. If you take a fact, idea, argument, or a body of information from a source (even if you don’t quote it), you must cite it. If you quote, you must cite at the end of the quotation. If you summarize, you must cite. Use standard MLA format for the usual: citing of sources (in the text), documenting of sources (in the Works Cited). What is of importance here is making a clear picture of this work as having a specific concern operating in it that makes it Modern. I will be available the week of 12-16 by email; expect replies within 24 hours of an email arriving.
