Career Services at UW-Stout Career Services is a centralized office at UW-Stout which serves students from all majors on campus. One of the main services students use is individual appointments with professional career counselors. This is the second year we hosted a Virtual Career Conference in which students and employers chatted online about career related opportunities. Both the employers and students who participated found this to be an excellent way to connect. “Mock Interview Days” with employers was replaced this year with a program called “Mock Interview Plus” which gave students the opportunity to conduct practice interviews with trained peers. CareerSpots (our online career video library) continues to add new career related video content to our website and is utilized by many students 24/7. The BIG Guide Online is also available to students and is one of the world’s best international career guides for students and young professionals considering going abroad to study, volunteer, intern, teach or work. Career Services continues to provide cutting edge online resources to assist students and alumni with their professional career goals. Employment Trends This year we saw the return of large employers to campus recruitment with an increase in the number of employers attending Career Conference and the number of co-op opportunities for students. Manufacturing hiring was up 25 percent according to Michigan State University’s Recruiting Trends survey, which shows that the economy was bouncing back. Other areas of hiring growth were engineering and computer science. One of the trends in recruiting this year was the increased use of social media. According to the Michigan State survey, 92 percent of employers used LinkedIn to keep students connected between offer and start date; 70 percent used Facebook; and 63.7 percent used Twitter. On-campus interviews were used by approximately 75 percent of employers responding. Companies branded themselves by attending Career Conference and used their corporate websites extensively. The average number of days from interview to hire was 24.7 days; and the average number of days from offer to acceptance was 3.5 days. For employers, the future of college recruiting will be in interactive technology such as smart phones and iPads. Career Services programs and individual career counselor appointments are available to all students and alumni at UWStout. Faculty members also integrate career information into the curriculum by inviting Career Counselors into the classroom for presentations. Together the entire campus collaborates to help students define and build their career before they graduate.
