Recycling on UW-Stout Campus

PURPOSE
UW-Stout is committed to a standard for campus-wide recycling of a number of materials. This
administrative procedure establishes the parameters for recycling on campus.
This administrative procedure applies to all students, faculty, and staff of UW-Stout, as well as to
visitors of the campus.

DEFINITIONS
•
No Sort Recycling – Commingled recycling that includes plastic (all rigid containers #1 to
#7), glass, aluminum, tin, steel, mixed paper (office paper, newspaper, magazines, cardstock)
•
Organics for Compost – Any material that can be composted; includes food waste,
compostable food containers, compostable cups, dinner napkins, paper towels, and
compostable dinnerware
•
Trash for Landfill – Any material that cannot be recycled or composted; includes foil, plastic
bags, plastic wrap, candy wrappers, gum, lamination, restroom tissue, personal hygiene items
•
Cardboard – All cardboard that is corrugated, including pizza boxes that are not heavily
soiled
PROCEDURES
1. Three containers are to be grouped together in a cluster at every location where a waste
container is placed. When facing the containers, they are to be ordered left to right as
follows: No Sort Recycling, Organics for Compost, Trash for Landfill.
2. Sticker signage should be adhered to each container with the proper wording and a brief
listing of the items that can be placed in the containers. Containers should be placed so that
the stickers are facing the corridors.

3. When currently possible and in any future purchases of containers, containers are to be
colored as follows:

Organics for Compost: Green
Trash for Landfill: Black
4. Organics for Compost containers are to be lined with compostable bags and emptied by the
custodial staff, stored in a designated area of each building, then brought to a central location
on campus.
5. In all buildings on campus, flattened cardboard is to be placed near No Sort Recycling
containers, to be collected by the custodial staff.
6. Containers are to be sized appropriately for the area in which they are located and for the
amount of waste in that area. Custodial supervisors are to be consulted to determine the
appropriate size of containers for each location.
7. Container sets are to be located in the following locations of all occupied buildings on
campus:

Near exits of occupied buildings, provided they do not block egress
In interior corridors with frequent traffic
No containers are to be located within classrooms or meeting rooms. Container sets are to be
within visual distance when exiting any room in a building.
8. Since containers are not present in classrooms or meeting rooms, signage is to be posted at
the front and exit of each classroom and meeting room that reads as follows:
At UW-Stout sustainability is important to us.
Recycling, composting, and trash containers are located outside this room.
9. Two containers are to be located in laboratories and lab classrooms where food is not
allowed:

12. Containers located in outdoor locations on campus are to be grouped together in a cluster of
two at every location where a waste container is placed. When facing outdoor containers,
they are to be ordered left to right as follows:

13. No Sort Recycling, Cardboard, and Organics for Compost are to be picked up by custodial
staff and brought to centralized locations on campus.
14. Recycling of other materials is to be performed as follows:
Batteries: Recycled by campus mail to Surplus or at the Memorial Student Center location
Laser jet cartridges: Recycled by Surplus
Ink jet cartridges: Recycled by campus mail to Surplus or at the Memorial Student Center
location
Foam peanuts: Recycled by Physical Plant
Used light bulbs: Recycled by Physical Plant
Used motor oil: Recycled by Physical Plant
Used tires: Recycled by Physical Plant
Scrap metal: Recycled by Physical Plant
Scrap wood: Recycled by Physical Plant
Cooking oil in Heritage Hall: Recycled by Food and Nutrition Department
Cooking oil in Dining Services: Recycled by University Dining Services
VHS tapes and CDs: Recycled by Physical Plant
