The Corporation for Public
Broadcasting recently gave WJUFFM an $80,000 grant for digital
conversion. The conversion should
be completed within one year at a
total cost of $119,572.
Documentary Institute
screens latest project
at Phillips Center
The Documentary Institute will
screen “Angel of Ahlem”
Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the
Phillips Center for the Performing
Arts.
Featured in a recent Susan
Stamberg series on NPR, the 90minute documentary follows
Vernon Tott, a dying World War II
veteran, as he races against time to
find Holocaust survivors he
photographed 60 years earlier at a
labor camp outside Hanover,
Germany.
Four Ahlem survivors plan to
attend the screening, along with
State University System Chancellor
Mark Rosenberg; Admiral LeRoy
Collins Jr., executive director of the
Florida Department of Veterans’
Affairs; and Kate Nolan, a World
War II nurse whose story also was
featured in the NPR series, and her
son, Major Steve Nolan, a
Gainesville resident who just
returned from Afghanistan.

The WUFT/WJUF anniversary
poster signing will take place Nov. 13
from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Harn
Museum of Art.
The poster celebrates the 26th
anniversary of Classic 89 and the 12th
anniversary of Nature Coast 90, and it
features the artwork of local graphic
designer Jim Harrison.
It will be available for a $100
pledge during the October
Membership Campaign.

Telecommunication Policy Research
Conference for “Fixed and Mobile
Broadband Deployment: An

Factors.”

Center for the Performing Arts in
Washington, D.C. She’s serving as a
press intern for the National
Symphony Orchestra.

Justin Brown served on an AEJMC
pre-conference workshop panel
broadcast live on C-SPAN in August.
The workshop addressed the future of
electronic media regulation and policy.
Other panelists included Daniel
Brenner of the National Cable
Telecommunications Association,
Herbert A. Terry of Indiana University
and Richard Wiley, former chair of the
FCC and managing partner at Wiley
Rein Law Firm in Washington, D.C.
Brown also participated on the
International Communication
Association’s “Broadband as the Basis
for an Evolved Universal Service-The
Benton Universal Service Project” panel
this summer.
Brown participated in a panel at the
Telecommunication Policy Research
Conference in September as part of the
Stuart Newman, JM 1946, an alumnus of distinction,
received the Bill Adams Lifetime Achievement Award
from the Miami Chapter of the Public Relations Society
of America in September.
The Newman PR agency chairman has practiced public
relations in South Florida for more than 60 years.
The communigator recently won its sixth Florida
Magazine Association award in the past three years. “Bo
Knows,” by Editor Boaz Dvir, won a Charlie Award for
Best Column.
MediaStorm, a multimedia storytelling Web site, won
an Emmy for Outstanding Broadband Documentary this
year. The site’s production team includes senior producer
Robert Browman, JM 1996.
