THE DIGITAL DOMAIN McAdams publishes blog series Mindy McAdams recently released a PDF version of her 15-part blog series, Reporter’s Guide to Multimedia Proficiency. Journalist Ulrike Langer is publishing a German translation in weekly installments. Both the translations and distribution are under a Creative Commons license. Also, the German news organization Deutsche Welle is translating McAdams’ blog series into Russian. GOOD CAUSE Sorel, students shoot segment of fundraiser production in Tampa Telecommunication junior Kelly Streeter and telecommunication senior Victor Kutz recently traveled with Tim Sorel to George Steinbrenner Stadium in Tampa to record a high-definition interview with former New York Yankee Roy White. Doctoral student Paul Braun recently won the 2009 Daniel Walden Award of the Mid Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association for “The Outside Story: The Great Gatsby as Journalism.” Moonhee Cho, a doctoral student specializing in public relations, and her adviser Kathleen Kelly recently won the 2009 Best Master’s Kelly Thesis Award, sponsored by the Institute for Public Relations and Northwestern Mutual. Giselle Auger, a second-year doctoral student specializing in public relations, received a 2009 Emerging Scholar Award from the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action. Journalism chair as prolific as ever The Los Angeles Times recently named William McKeen’s “Rock and Roll is Here to Stay” an “essential rock read.” Random House recently contracted McKeen to write “Mile Marker Zero,” a nonfiction book about writers, artists and actors who converged on Key West in the 1970s to write novels and songs, make movies and take drugs. He recently finished editing an anthology about Florida childhoods, “Paradise Recalled.” He expects it to be published next year. Irish journalist Martin Flynn interviewed McKeen for Beat Scene, a British magazine devoted to writers of the Beat Generation. McKeen is pictured with Hunter S. Thompson in the article, “A Sensible Take on a Weird Life.” Students win variety of awards SOUND ADVICE Public Relations Advisory Council begins its 30th year The Public Relations Advisory Council recently began its 30th year. Fifteen council members visited classes, held meetings and listened to presentations. The group also heard a State of the College Report by Dean John Wright. “We greatly appreciate all the good hard volunteer work the council members do for us on a continuous basis,” Wright said. 3 the open line Dec. 7, 2009 PAPER TRAIL FACULTY FOCUS Kiousis named Research Foundation Professor Vice President of Research Win Phillips recently named Spiro Kiousis a 2009 UF Research Foundation Professor. The College recently named Lynda Kaid and Deanna Pelfrey International Educators of the Year. An acclaimed scholar and teacher in political and global communication, Kaid has written or edited more than 20 books, many of which have an international focus. Pelfrey has built a significant record in international public relations practice, research, teaching and service. John Freeman will discuss “Lessons Learned: Five Years of Study Abroad” at the Photo Marketing Association’s 2010 International Trade Show and Convention in California in February. Kiousis Kaid Pelfrey Freeman GATORS ON FILM Tim Sorel wins two awards for “Reading Safari.” (Photo by Steve Johnson) Sorel documentary a winner Tim Sorel’s “Reading Safari” recently won two juried competitions in the educational categories: A Gold Telly Award from the People’s Telly Awards and a Silver Davey Award from the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The short documentary shows Alachua County third graders learning to read. Sorel is in post-production on the feature film, “Ashley Lynn,” which he shot and produced. He’s also finishing a feature documentary about human rights issues in Cambodia. Lewis wins award for paper on women’s newsroom acceptance Norman Lewis won an award for the second-best article published during the preceding year in American Journalism Review for “From Cheesecake to Chief: Newspaper Editors’ Slow Acceptance of Women.” The award was given during an American Journalism Lewis Historians Association meeting. Kim Walsh-Childers recently presented “Geographic Differences in Women’s Use of the Internet for Health and Cancer Information” at a biannual gathering of researchers of Health Information National Trend Surveys, The HINTS Data Users Conference in Silver Walsh-Childers Spring, Md. Walsh-Childers was one of 16 presenters and co-authored the paper with faculty and a doctoral student from the UF College of Medicine and the College of Public Health and Public Professions. The Public Relations Review recently accepted Ron Rodgers’ Rodgers “The Press and Public Relations Through the Lens of the Periodicals, 1890 to 1930.” 4 the open line Dec. 7, 2009 BOOK ‘EM DEEPEST SYMPATHY Molleda authors two chapters Betty Hooper, 74 Juan-Carlos Molleda co-wrote two chapters in “International Media Communication in a Global Age,” a book geared toward upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. The College extends its deepest sympathy to the family of retired advertising faculty member Leonard (Buddy) Hooper, whose wife Betty Hooper died of cancer after a twoyear fight with related illnesses. She was 74. Richard B. Ward, 67 Molleda SPEAK EASY Chance, Calvert address law school Sandra Chance and Clay Calvert recently discussed First Amendment issues at the UF Levin College of Law. The American Constitution Society sponsored the event, Chance according to FlaLaw Online. The law school publication quoted Chance as saying, “For me, the idea of prohibiting speech that might offend is in itself offensive.” The College extends deepest sympathy to the family of Richard B. Ward, a former captain of detectives with the Gainesville Police Department. He died recently at the age of 67. He was the husband of Nancy Ward, long-time assistant in the WUFT-FM station manager’s office.
