a resilient community. Growing your own produce
increases local food security. Walking, rather than
driving to the store, is healthy for both you and
the environment. And Talewind Books is a locallyowned, independent business which means that the
dollars you spend there stay local. These activities
all build a resilient community — one that has the
capacity to weather economic downturns.
I recently enrolled in a certificate program at Simon
Fraser University. I had to read three books before
the course started and asked Bev Shaw at Talewind
Books to order them for me. The books arrived the
following week. A few months earlier I had ordered
from a big online seller – receiving the book weeks
later after numerous delays. This time, my money
went to Talewind which Shaw used to pay her staff.
The staff used that money to shop in local stores
owned by local people … you get the picture. It’s
the multiplier effect of circulating local dollars. My
payment to the online bookseller left the Sunshine
Coast to pay the rent on some warehouse in the
United States the size of two football fields. No
local impact in that case. Our community lost out.
Shaw tucked her complimentary bookmark into my
