Getting Started...
1
the design of the deck… it is the beginning of a successful project.
1. Completely read the application instructions… before starting the installation of the deck.
2. Properly unload and store DuraLife™ Natural Grain decking…
a. Do not dump or drop decking from the back of a truck or trailer. Decking should
be off-loaded by forklift or by hand. Store decking on a level area on wood
supports placed every 3 feet (914 mm).
b. Protect DuraLife™ Natural Grain decking during storage with a lumber cover or tarp.
3. Use proper lifting techniques... when lifting DuraLife™ Natural Grain decking; it is heavier than
standard wood materials.
4. Use proper joist placement… to realize savings in both time of installation and from cost of
materials. Make sure the joist direction maximizes the desired lay-out of the deck.
5. If a railing is to be installed… consult the railing manufacturer for the required spacing between the
railing posts.
6. Follow all local and state building codes… when planning and installing your deck.
7. Use normal wood working tools… to cut, route or fasten DuraLife™ Natural Grain decking. For
cutting, carbide-tip saw blades with approximately 2 teeth per inch are recommended for best
results.
8. Tools needed...
• Circular saw (24 tooth carbide blades).
• Cordless drill with a quick drive bit for pre-drilling holes and screw fastening.
9. Always use personal safety equipment… when using tools.
Ventilation and
Drainage…
1. To perform properly… DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking must be installed with proper
drainage and ventilation.
2. Ensure that:
a. Joists are level across each span… a slight slant of the deck [1/8 inch (3 mm) for every 8 feet (2.4 m)] away from your home for drainage is required.
b. The substructure has at least 2” (51 mm) clearance from grade.
c. Skirting does not impede airflow under the deck.
3. Where ventilation is minimal or obstructed… flow through or soffit venting must be added
around the perimeter of the deck to create cross ventilation under the entire substructure to avoid
accumulation of moisture and humidity.
4. Never attach DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking to… any solid surface, watertight
membrane, concrete, or existing decking.
Framing Your
Deck…
1. Use minimum nominal 2”x 8” (51mm x 203 mm)… sized joist for deck frame construction. KDAT
(kiln dried after treatment) stamped framing lumber is recommended as it is typically straighter,
lighter, easier to handle, and will not shrink or expand as much after installation as non-KDAT lumber.
2. Never use DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking as structural members… when
constructing your deck.
3. Use 16” (406 mm) on center joist spacing… if the decking is to be installed perpendicular to
the joist.
4. Use 12” (305 mm) on center joist spacing…
a. If the decking is to be installed at an angle to the joist (maximum 45° angle).
b. In heavy traffic areas (i.e. restaurant patios, hotel walkways, public boardwalks, etc.).
5. Confirm required joist spacing… with local and state building code agencies.
6. If heavy equipment is going to be installed on the deck… such as a hot tub, consult the equipment
manufacturer for specific requirements for framing and support.
7. Install the framing joist vertically… with the 2” (51 mm) side in contact with the decking. Do not
install decking on framing that has been installed flat with the 8” (203 mm) side in contact with the
decking, as this may cause debris and moisture to be trapped between the framing and decking.
Using DuraLife™
Natural Grain
Decking as
Stair Treads…
1. Do not space stringers wider than 12” (305 mm) on center… when using DuraLife™ Natural Grain
decking for stair treads.
2.Overhang… for stair treads must not exceed 2” (51 mm).
Blocking is
REQUIRED
Where The End
of Two Deck
Boards Meet…
When the design of the deck is longer than 20’ (6.1 m) or it is a
unique design, blocking, (“sistering”), or additional framing is
required.
1. DO NOT SHARE JOISTS OR FASTENERS, at butt end joints in
the decking… the ends of each deck board are to be individually
supported and fastened (See fig. 1).
2. Transition/divider boards or other intricate designs… require
additional blocking or framing.
Board Spacing
or Gapping…
All decking expands and contracts slightly as a result of temperature change.
When installing DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection Solid profile boards…
During installation, always space boards to provide the following minimum gaps to allow for these
changes:
• Side to Side… 3/16” (4.8 mm).
• End to End… typically 3/16” (4.8 mm depending on board length and temperature
(see Chart 1 - “Deck Spacing Calculator”).
• Structure… typically 3/16” (4.8 mm) between all decking and any structure or post
(see Chart 1 - “Deck Spacing Calculator”).
When using DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection grooved profile boards with the Sabre™Clip Fasteners.
During installation, always space boards to provide the following minimum gaps to allow for these
changes:
• Side to Side… fasteners automatically gap boards 3/16” (2 mm).
• End to End… typically 3/16” (4.8 mm) depending on board length and temperature
(see Chart 1 - “Deck Spacing Calculator”).
• Structure… typically 3/16” (4.8 mm) between all decking and any structure or post
(see Chart 1 - “Deck Spacing Calculator”).
Note: If the deck is located near or around a tree, be sure to allow for future growth of the tree.

Color and
Orientation of
The Decking
Boards…

1. Natural fiber used in the manufacturing of DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking…
is intended to create subtle color variations between boards.
2.DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking has a directional grain… as a result light will reflect off
the surface of the board differently depending on the orientation of the grain.
3. To ensure a consistent color across the deck… it is vital to maintain the same orientation of
the deck boards during installation.
• Align the arrows… that are imprinted on the side of each board so that they point in the
same direction.
4. Always lay out… the deck boards before final installation to ensure an acceptable
color mix.
Note: The color of DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking may gradually fade over time. This is
natural and expected. Fading and color variations are not covered under the limited warranty.
Fastening…
There are two methods…
that can be used to fasten DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking.
1.Sabre™ Clip hidden fasteners:
a.Two Sabre™ Clip hidden fasteners… are required at each joist, one on each side of the decking
board, regardless of the joist spacing.
b.Side to side spacing is maintained… by the Sabre™ Clip hidden fasteners.
c. Face fastening of the outer most edge of the first and last board… is required when using
Sabre™ Clip hidden fasteners. (See face fastening instructions below.)
Note: If the deck design utilizes transition, divider boards or herringbone designs,
Sabre™ Clip hidden fasteners can be used to fasten boards at perpendicular junctions.
• Disassemble the clip by unscrewing the fastener and removing the plastic insert on the bottom of
the stainless steel cap.
• Use the fastener and the pointed stainless steel cap to secure all boards creating the joint.
• Make sure all adjoining boards are engaged in by the fastener.
2. Face fastening:
a.Use #8 x 2 ½” composite lumber or standard deck screws… when installing DuraLife™ Natural
Grain Collection decking.
b.Stainless steel or coated deck screws… are recommended.
c. Anti-mushrooming screws… will enhance the final look of the installation and do not require
pre-drilling except at the ends of the deck boards. When using regular wood deck screws, first
pre-drill and countersink all fasteners locations.
d.Two fasteners… are required at each joist, one on each side of the board, regardless of the
joist spacing.
e.Drive fasteners straight… directly through the deck boards at a 90° angle to the decking
surface. Do not toe nail or drill at an angle.
f. Never place fasteners… closer than ¾” (19 mm) from the edge or ends of the board and when
not pre-drilling, no closer than 1½” (38 mm) from the edge or end of the board.
Note: If the ends of the boards are fastened within 1½” (38 mm) of the end of the board, always
pre-drill and countersink fasteners when fastening the boards regardless of the type of fastener
being used.
g.For the best appearance, use a white chalk line… to ensure straight fastener lines.
Caution: Colored chalk can stain the decking and can be very difficult to remove.
Finishing The
Deck Board
Installation…
Trimming may be needed… after all decking has been installed:
1.DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking should NOT extend more than
2” (51 mm)… beyond the framing in any direction.
2. Use a white chalk line… to provide a cut line for squaring off the decking.
Caution: Colored chalk can stain the decking and can be very difficult to remove.
3. Use a circular saw… to trim the ends of the DuraLife™ Natural Grain Collection decking along the
chalk line.

Installing Fascia
(Optional)…
See Fig. 2
1. Fasten fascia boards… using minimum #8 x 2” composite lumber or standard deck screws.
• Two fasteners… are required, one on each side of the fascia board,
spaced approximately 12” (305 mm) apart on center.
• Place fasteners a minimum of 1” (25 mm) from each side and 1 ½” (38 mm)
from the ends of the fascia boards.
2. When decking boards are installed picture framing the deck… allow the framing
boards to over hang the outer rim joists by 1 ½” (38 mm). Fasten the fascia board to
the rim joist, leaving a 1/8” (3.2 mm) gap between the top of the fascia and the bottom
of the deck boards.
3. When decking boards are installed without picture framing the deck… trim the deck boards so
they run past the outer rim joists by 2” (51 mm). Fasten the fascia board to the rim joist, leaving a
1/8” (3.2 mm) gap between the top of the fascia and the bottom of the deck boards.
Note: When using fascia to cover joists wider that 7 ½” (190 mm) you can either stack multiple layers
of fascia or use a combination of fascia boards, deck boards and 2x4s as accents to create a
unique look.

1. To maintain the appearance of your DuraLife™ Natural Grain decking… sweep periodically and
clean spills with soap and water.
2. If grime, ground-in dirt, mold or mildew become a concern… consult the DuraLife™ Natural Grain
Collection decking cleaning instructions on-line at www.GAF.com or call 1-866-322-7452.
Caution: Only use pressure washers for low pressure wetting and rinsing. High pressure washing can
damage the surface of the decking. Test all cleaning products on
an inconspicuous area before using on the entire deck.

Cómo Empezar...
Ventilación
y Desagüe…
el diseño de la plataforma... es el comienzo de un proyecto exitoso.
1. Lea completamente las instrucciones de aplicación... antes de iniciar la instalación de la plataforma.
2. Descargue y almacene correctamente la plataforma de Grano Natural DuraLife™...
a. No arroje ni deje caer la plataforma desde la parte trasera de un camión o remolque.
La plataforma debe ser descargada mediante el uso de un elevador o manualmente. Almacene la
plataforma... en un área nivelada sobre soportes de madera colocados
cada 3 pies (914mm).
b. P roteja la plataforma de Grano Natural DuraLife™ durante el almacenamiento con una cubierta de
listones o una lona.
3. Use técnicas de levantamiento apropiadas... al levantar las plataformas de Grano Natural DuraLife™; es
ligeramente más liviana que los materiales de madera estándar.
4. Utilice una colocación correcta de las viguetas... para ahorrar tanto en el tiempo de instalación como en

1. Para su correcto funcionamiento... la Colección de plataformas de Grano Natural DuraLife™ debe ser
instalada con desagüe y ventilación adecuados.
2. Asegúrese que:
a. Las viguetas están niveladas sobre cada larguero... se requiere una ligera inclinación de la plataforma [1/8
pulgadas (3mm) por cada 8 pies (2.4m)] de distancia de su hogar para desagüe.
b. La subestructura debe tener por lo menos 2” (51mm) de distancia del gradiente.
c. El rodapié no obstaculice el flujo de aire debajo de la terraza.
3. Donde la ventilación sea mínima o esté obstruida... se debe agregar flujo pasante o ventilación de sofito
alrededor del perímetro de la plataforma para promover la ventilación cruzada bajo la subestructura con el fin
de evitar la acumulación de humedad.
4. Nunca adose la Colección de plataformas Grano Natural DuraLife™ directamente sobre... cualquier
superficie sólida, membrana impermeable, concreto o plataforma existente.

1. Use un mínimo nominal de 2” x 8” (51mm x 203mm)… en el tamaño de las viguetas para construcciones de
estructura de la plataforma. Se recomienda la madera de marcos estampada KDAT (secado al horno después
de tratamiento), ya que típicamente es más recta, liviana y fácil de manipular, y la misma no se encogerá ni
expandirá tanto después de la instalación como la madera sin tratamiento KDAT.
2. Nunca use a la Colecciónla de plataformas Grano Natural DuraLife™ como miembro estructural... cuando
vaya a construir su plataforma.
3. Use un espaciado entre viguetas de 16” (406mm) en el centro... si la plataforma se va instalar en forma
perpendicular a la vigueta.
4. Use un espaciado entre viguetas de 12” (305mm) en el centro...
a. Si se va a instalar la plataforma en ángulo con respecto a la vigueta (ángulo máximo 45°).
b. En áreas de tránsito intenso (por ej., patios de restaurantes, pasarelas de hoteles, entarimados públicos, etc.).
5. Confirme el espaciado requerido entre viguetas... con las agencias de código de construcción locales
y estatales.
6. Si va a instalar equipamiento pesado en la plataforma... como por ejemplo una tina de baño, consulte al
fabricante del equipamiento para requerimientos específicos de marcos y soporte.
7. Instale la vigueta de marcos en forma vertical... con el lado de 2” (51mm) en contacto con la plataforma.
No instale plataformas en encofrados que hayan sido instalados en forma plana con el lado de 8” (203mm)
en contacto con la plataforma, ya que esto podría causar que escombros y humedad queden atrapados entre
el marco y la plataforma.

1. No deje un espaciado entre largueros más ancho que 12” (305mm) en elcentro... cuando use la plataforma
de Grano Natural DuraLife™ para peldaños de escalera.
2. La saliente... para peldaños de escalera no debe excederse de 2” (51mm).
Cuando el diseño de la plataforma sea más largo que 20’ (6.1m) o
sea un diseño único... se requiere bloqueo impermeable (“sistering”)
o marcos adicionales.
1. NO COMPARTA VIGUETAS O Sujetadores en las juntas de empalme
del piso en la plataforma... los extremos de cada tabla de plataforma
deben estar individualmente apoyados y sujetados (Ver fig. 1).
2. Las tablas de transición/divisorias u otros diseños intrincados...
requierenbloqueo o marcos adicionales.
Todas las plataformas se expanden y contraen a medida que cambian las temperaturas.
Cuando instale tablas de perfil Sólido de la Colección Grano Natural DuraLife™...
Durante la instalación, siempre coloque las tablas a distancia para proporcionar las siguientes
brechas mínimas a fin de permitir estos cambios:
• De Lado a Lado… 3/16” (4.8mm).
• De Extremo a Extremo... típicamente 3/16” (4.8mm dependiendo del largo y temperatura de la tabla

Cuando use tablas de perfil Acanalado de la Colección Grano Natural DuraLife™ con los Sujetadores de Gancho
Sabre™. Durante la instalación, siempre coloque las tablas a distancia para proporcionar las siguientes brechas
mínimas a fin de permitir estos cambios:
• De Lado a Lado... los sujetadores se espacian entre tablas automáticamente a 3/16” (2mm).
• De Extremo a Extremo... típicamente 3/16” (4.8mm dependiendo del largo y temperatura de la tabla
(ver Gráfico 1 – “Calculadora de Espaciado de Plataformas”).
• Estructura... típicamente 3/16” (4.8mm) entre toda la plataforma y cualquier estructura o poste
(ver Gráfico 1 – “Calculadora de Espaciado de Plataformas”).
Nota: Si la plataforma está ubicada cerca o alrededor de un árbol, asegúrese de tomar precauciones para
permitir el crecimiento futuro del árbol.

Orientación de
las Tablas de
Plataformas...
1. La fibra natural usada en la fabricación de las plataformas de la Colección Grano Natural
DuraLife™... está destinada a crear sutiles variaciones de color entre tablas.
2. La Colección de plataformas Grano Natural DuraLife™ tienen un grano direccional... como
resultado de ello, la luz se refleja sobre la superficie de la tabla en forma diferente dependiendo de la
orientación del grano.
3. Para garantizar un color consistente en toda la plataforma... es vital mantener la misma orientación de las
tablas de plataforma durante la instalación.
• Alinee las flechas... que están impresas al costado de cada tabla de modo que apunten en
la misma dirección.
4. Siempre disponga las tablas de la plataforma... antes de la instalación final para garantizar una mezcla de
color aceptable.
Nota: El color de la Colección de plataformas Grano Natural DuraLife™ puede ir desvaneciéndose
gradualmente con el tiempo. Esto es natural y esperable. Las variaciones de color y la decoloración no
están cubiertas por la garantía limitada.
Sujetadores…
Existen dos métodos...
que se pueden usar para sujetar la plataforma de la Colección Grano Natural DuraLife™.
1. Sujetadores ocultos Ganchos Sabre™
a. Dos sujetadores ocultos Sabre Clip™... son requeridos en cada vigueta uno a cada lado de la tabla, sin
importar el espaciado entre viguetas.
b. El espaciado de lado a lado se mantiene... con los sujetadores ocultos Ganchos Sabre™.
c. Se requiere el sujetado expuesto del borde más externo de la primera y última tablas... cuando se
utilicen sujetadores ocultos Sabre Clip™. (Consulte las instrucciones de sujeción expuesta debajo.)
Nota: Si el diseño de la plataforma utiliza tablas de transición, divisorias o diseños en espiga, se pueden usar
los sujetadores ocultos Sabre Clip™ para sujetar las tablas en las juntas perpendiculares.
• Desmonte el gancho desatornillando el sujetador y quitando el inserto plástico en la parte inferior
del tope de acero inoxidable.
• Use el sujetador y el tope de acero inoxidable en punta para asegurar todas las tablas que
creen la junta.
• Asegúrese que todas las tablas adyacentes queden sujetadas por el sujetador.
2. Sujeción expuesta:
a. Use tornillos de madera compuesta o tornillos estándar para plataformas N° 8 x 2 ½” (63.5mm)...
cuando instale la Colección de plataformas Grano Natural DuraLife™.
b. Se recomienda usar... tornillos para plataforma de acero inoxidable o revestidos.
c. Los tornillos anti-hongos... mejorarán la apariencia final de la instalación y no requieren pre-taladrado
excepto en los extremos de las tablas de plataforma. Cuando use tornillos comunes para plataformas de
madera, primero pre-taladre y avellane todas las ubicaciones de sujetadores.
d. Dos sujetadores... son requeridos en cada vigueta, uno a cada lado de la tabla, sin importar el espaciado
entre las viguetas.
e. Clave los sujetadores... en forma recta directamente a través de las tablas de plataforma a un ángulo de
90 grados con respecto a la superficie de la terraza. No clave en forma oblicua ni taladre en ángulo.
f. Nunca coloque sujetadores... más cerca que ¾” (19mm) desde el borde o extremos de la tabla y cuando
no haya pre-taladrado, no más cerca que 1 ½” (38mm) desde el borde o extremos de la tabla.
Nota: S i los extremos de las tablas están sujetados dentro de 1 ½” (38mm) del extremo de la tabla, siempre
pre-taladre y avellane los sujetadores para sujetar las tablas sin importar el tipo de sujetador que vaya
a utilizar.
g. Para obtener la mejor apariencia, use una línea de tiza blanca... para garantizar líneas de sujeción
más rectas.
Precaución: La tiza de color puede manchar la plataforma y puede ser difícil de quitar.
Terminación de
la Instalación
De Las Tablas
De Plataforma...
Es posible que necesite recortar... después de haber instalado toda la plataforma:
1. La Colección de plataformas Grano Natural DuraLife™ NO debe extenderse más de 2” (51mm)... más allá
del encofrado en cualquier dirección.
2. Use una línea de tiza blanca... para proporcionar una línea de corte para encuadrar la plataforma
Precaución: La tiza de color puede manchar la plataforma y puede ser difícil de quitar.
3. Use una sierra circular... para recortar los extremos de la Colección de plataformas Natural DuraLife™
a lo largo de la línea de tiza.

INSTALACIÓN
DE FRONTIS
(OPCIONAL)...

1. Sujete las tablas de frontis... usando listones “composite” N° 8 x 2” (51mm) o tornillos estándar
para plataforma.
• Dos sujetadores... se requieren, uno a cada lado de la tabla de frontis, espaciados aproximadamente
a 12” (305mm) en el centro.
• Coloque los sujetadores a un mínimo de 1” (25mm) de cada lado y 1 ½” (38mm) de los extremos de
las tablas de frontis.
2. Cuando se instalen tablas de plataforma con estructura tipo marco... deje que las tablas del marcos
sobresalgan de las viguetas del borde exterior 1 ½” (38mm). Sujete la tabla de frontis a la vigueta de borde,
dejando una brecha de 1/8” (3.2mm) entre la parte superior del frontis y la parte inferior de las tablas de
plataforma.
3. Cuando se instalen tablas de plataforma sin estructura tipo marco... recorte las tablas de plataforma para
que corran más allá de las viguetas del borde exterior por 2” (5151 mm). Sujete la tabla de frontis a la vigueta
de borde, dejando una brecha de 1/8” (3.2mm) entre la parte superior del frontis y la parte inferior de las
tablas de plataforma.
Nota: Cuando utilice frontis para cubrir viguetas más anchas que 7 ½” (190mm) usted puede apilar
capas múltiples de frontis o usar una combinación de tablas de frontis, tablas de plataforma y
listones de 2x4 (51mm x 102mm) como acentos para crear una apariencia única.

periódicamente y limpie los derrames con agua y jabón.

Precaución: Utilice solamente lavadoras a presión para humedecido y enjuague de baja presión. El lavado a alta
presión puede dañar la superficie de la plataforma. Pruebe todos los productos de limpieza sobre un área
apartada de la vista antes de usarla sobre toda la plataforma.
