Siesta
the design of the deck… it is the beginning of a successful project.
1. Completely read the application instructions… before starting the installation of the deck.
Plan
Getting Started...
2. Properly unload and store DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking…
• Do not dump or drop decking from the back of a truck or trailer. Decking should be off-loaded by
forklift or by hand. Store decking on a level area on wood supports placed every 3 ft. (914 mm).
• Protect DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking during storage with lumber cover or tarp.
3. Use proper lifting techniques... when lifting DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking; it is heavier than
standard wood materials.
4. Use proper joist placement… to realize savings in both time of installation and from cost of
materials. Make sure the joist direction maximizes the desired lay-out of the deck.
5. If a railing is to be installed… consult the railing manufacturer for the required spacing between the
railing posts.
6. Follow all local and state building codes… when planning and installing your deck.
7. Use normal wood working tools… to cut, route, or fasten DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking.
For cutting, use carbide-tip saw blades with approximately 2 teeth per inch.
8. Tools needed…
• Circular saw (24 tooth carbide blades).
• Cordless drill with a quick drive bit for pre-drilling holes and screw fastening.
• Non-marring dead blow hammer or mallet for tapping boards into place.
• A BoWrench® tool or pry bar for setting boards in tights places.
9. Always use personal safety equipment… when using tools.

Ventilation and
Drainage…
1. To perform properly… DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking must be installed with proper drainage
and ventilation.
2. Ensure that:
a. The joists are level across each span… and that there is a slight slant of the deck [1/8 inch (3 mm) for
every 8 feet (2.4 m)] away from your home for drainage.
b. The substructure has at least 2” (51 mm) clearance from grade.
c. Skirting does not impede airflow under the deck.
3. Where ventilation is minimal or obstructed… flow through or soffit venting must be added
around the perimeter of the deck to create cross ventilation under the entire substructure to avoid
accumulation of moisture and humidity.
4. Never attach DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking to… any solid surface, watertight membrane,
concrete, or existing decking.
Framing Your
Deck…
1. Use minimum nominal 2”x 8” (51mm x 203 mm)… sized joist for deck frame constructions. KDAT
(kiln dried after treatment) stamped framing lumber is recommended as it is typically straighter, lighter,
easier to handle, and will not, shrink and expand as much after installation as non-KDAT lumber.
2. Never use DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking as structural members… when constructing
your deck.
3. Use 16” (406 mm) on center joist spacing… if the decking is to be installed perpendicular to the joist.
4. Use 12” (305 mm) on center joist spacing…
a. If the decking is to be installed at an angle to the joist (maximum 45°angle).
b. In heavy traffic areas (i.e., restaurant patios, hotel walkways, public boardwalks, etc.).
5. Confirm required joist spacing… with local and state building code agencies.
6. If heavy equipment is going to be installed on the deck… such as a hot tub, consult the equipment
manufacturer for specific requirements for framing and support.
Siesta
7. Install the framing joist vertically… with the 2” (51 mm) side in contact with the decking. Do not
install decking on framing that has been installed flat with the 8” (203 mm) side in contact with the
decking because this may cause debris and moisture to be trapped between the framing and decking.

1. Do not space stringers wider than 12” (305 mm) on center… when using DuraLife™ Siesta™
Collection decking for stair treads.
2.Overhang… for stair treads must not exceed 2” (51 mm).
When the design of the deck is longer than 20’ (6.1 m) or it is a
unique design, blocking (“sistering”) or additional framing is required.
1. Sharing Fastenator® Clips... between two boards at butt joints is allowed, but the ends of each
deck board must be individually supported.
2. Transition/divider boards or other intricate designs… require additional blocking or framing.
All decking expands and contracts slightly as a result of temperature change.
When installing DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection Classic profile boards…
During installation, always space boards to provide the following minimum gaps to allow for these changes:
• Side to Side… 3/16” (4.8 mm).
• End to End… typically 3/16” (4.8 mm depending on board length and temperature
(see Chart 2 - “Deck Spacing Calculator”).
• Structure… typically 3/16” (4.8 mm) between all decking and any structure or post
(see Chart 2 - “Deck Spacing Calculator”).
When using DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection Channeled profile boards with the Fastenator® hidden
fastening system…
During installation, always space boards to provide the following minimum gaps to allow for these changes:
• Side to Side… fasteners automatically gap boards 3/16” (4.8 mm).
• End to End… typically 3/16” (4.8 mm) depending on board length and temperature
(see Chart 2 - “Deck Spacing Calculator”).
• Structure… typically 3/16” (4.8 mm) between all decking and any structure or post
(see Chart 2 - “Deck Spacing Calculator”).
Note: If the deck is located near or around a tree, be sure to allow for future growth of the tree.
Color and
Orientation
of the Decking
Boards…
1.DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking has a directional grain… as a result, light will reflect off
the surface of the board differently depending on the orientation of the grain.
2. To ensure a consistent color across the deck… it is vital to maintain the same orientation of the
deck boards during installation.
3. Always lay out the deck boards... before final installation to ensure an acceptable color mix.
Note: The semi-gloss surface of DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking will weather to a natural matte
finish over time.
Fastening…
There are two methods… that can be used to fasten DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking.
• The Fastenator® hidden fastening system… can be used with DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection
Channeled Profile decking. Install Fastenator® Clips with a #7 x 2 ¼” square drive trim head
screws. (Fastenator® Clips with pre-installed #7 x 2 ¼” square drive trim head screws are available
at your local DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection dealer.)
Siesta
Note: Store Fastenator Clips indoors before use. Fastenator Clips install best between 40oF and 80oF (4oC
and 27oC).
• Traditional stainless steel composite decking fasteners… are required for the DuraLife™ Siesta™
Collection classic profile decking, and for the outer board edge of the starter profile boards in a channeled
profile decking installation.
1. Installing DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection Channeled profile decking using the Fastenator® hidden
fastener system:
a. Install a DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection starter profile board… by pre-drilling and countersinking a
screw hole 5/8” (16 mm) from the outer board edge. Screw down the outer edge of the DuraLife™
Siesta™ Collection starter profile board at every joist location using one #8 x 2½” stainless steel,
trim head deck screw.
b. Do not overhang… DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection starter profile board over joists by more than 1” (25 mm)
widthwise and 2” (51 mm) lengthwise.
c. Always place one Fastenator® hidden fastener… in the slot in the board edge at every joist, between
deck boards, regardless of the joist spacing. (Side to side spacing is maintained… by the Fastenator®
hidden fasteners.)
d. Use a #7 x 2 1/4” stainless steel screw… through the line in the center of the Fastenator® Clip at a 90°
angle (or use a Fastenator® Clip with a pre-installed #7 x 2 ¼” square drive trim head screw).
e. Starting at one end… slide the next DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection Channeled board onto the exposed
Fastenator® Clips of the first board and install a single Fastenator® Clip at one end of the out-board edge to
hold the board in place.
f. While standing on the new board… pound it tight with a non-marring dead blow hammer. Repeat steps
“c” through “f” for the remaining boards, installing Fastenator® Clips at each joist.
g. Always face fasten the outer most edge of the first and last board… when using Fastenator®
hidden fasteners.
Helpful Hints:
• Use a non-marring dead blow hammer as necessary to tap the Fastenator® Clip into the slot.
• A non-marring dead blow hammer or BoWrench® tool can also be used to help secure the next DuraLife™
Siesta™ Collection Channeled board into place.
• If the joists are uneven, apply pressure to the deck board where it does not touch the joist. As pressure is being
applied, tap the board into the Fastenator® Clip using the non-marring dead blow hammer.
• Use of a chisel or screwdriver will help hold the Fastenator® Clip in place when stapling it to the joist.
• In the case of a low joist, shim the Fastenator® Clip as necessary to seat in the slot in the edge of the deck board.
• Take a measurement of the total width of the installed boards to make sure they are parallel every 3-4 courses.
2. Installing DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection classic profile decking with traditional stainless steel screw
fasteners:
a. Use #8 x 2 ½” stainless steel, trim head deck screws… when installing DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection
Classic profile decking. (Headcote® Co. offers #8 x 2 1/2” trim head screws that are color matched to
all DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking colors.)
b. Pre-drill and countersink… for the screw size.
c. Two fasteners… are required at each joist, one on each side of the board, regardless of the joist spacing.
d. Drive fasteners straight… directly through the deck boards at a 90° angle to the decking surface.
Do not toe nail or drill at an angle.
e. Never place fasteners... closer than 5/8” (16 mm) from the edge or ends of the board.
f. For the best appearance, use a white chalk line… to ensure straight fastener lines.*

Finishing the
Deck Board
Installation…
Trimming may be needed… after all decking has been installed:
1.DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking should NOT extend more than 2” (51 mm)… beyond the
framing in any direction.
2. Use a white chalk line… to provide a cut line for squaring off the decking.*
3. Use a circular saw… to trim the ends of the DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking along the
chalk line.
*Caution: Colored chalk can stain the decking and can be very difficult to remove.

Installing Fascia
(Optional)…
See Fig. 2
1. Fasten fascia boards… using minimum #8 x 2” stainless steel deck screws.
• Use three fasteners… one in the middle and one on each side of the fascia board. Place fasteners
a minimum of 1” (25 mm) from side spaced approximately 12” (305 mm) on center. Locate end
fasteners 1 ½” (38 mm) from the ends of the fascia boards.
2. When decking boards are installed picture framing the deck… fasten the fascia board to the rim
joist, leaving a 1/8” (3.2 mm) gap between the top of the fascia and the bottom of the deck boards.
Decking boards should not overhang the outer rim joists by more than 2” (51 mm).
3. When decking boards are installed without picture framing the deck… trim the deck boards so
they run past the outer rim joists by less than 2” (51 mm). Fasten the fascia board to the rim joist,
leaving a 1/8” (3.2 mm) gap between the top of the fascia and the bottom of the deck boards.
Note: When using fascia to cover joists wider than 11 ½” (292 mm), either stack multiple layers of fascia
or use a combination of fascia boards, deck boards and 2x4s as accents to create a unique look.

1. To maintain the appearance of your DuraLife™ Siesta™ Collection decking… sweep periodically
and clean spills with soap and water.
2. If grime, ground-in dirt, mold or mildew become a concern… consult the DuraLife™ Siesta™
Collection cleaning instructions online at www.gaf.com or call 1-877-332-5877.
Caution: Only use pressure washers for low pressure wetting and rinsing. High pressure washing can
damage the surface of the decking. Always test all cleaning products on an inconspicuous area before
using on the entire deck.

Planear
el diseño de la plataforma... es el comienzo de un proyecto exitoso.
1. Lea completamente las instrucciones de aplicación... antes de iniciar la instalación de la plataforma.
2. Descargue y almacene correctamente la plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™...
Cómo Empezar...
• No arroje ni deje caer la plataforma base desde la parte trasera de un camión o remolque. La plataforma debe
ser descargada mediante el uso de un elevador o manualmente. Almacene la plataforma en un área nivelada sobre
soportes de madera colocados cada 3 pies (914mm).
• Proteja la plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ durante el almacenamiento con una cubierta de listones
o una lona.
3. Use técnicas de levantamiento apropiadas... al levantar la plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™; es
ligeramente más liviana que los materiales de madera estándar.

• Sierra circular (hojas de carburo de 24 dientes).

• Martillo o maza de goma anti-mella para colocar tablas en su lugar.
• Una herramienta BoWrench® o palanca para colocar las tablas en lugares estrechos.
Siempre use equipamiento de seguridad personal... cuando utilice herramientas.
1. Para su correcto funcionamiento... la plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ debe ser instalada con desagüe y
ventilación adecuados.
2. Asegúrese que:
a. Las viguetas deben estar niveladas sobre cada larguero... y deben tener al menos una ligera inclinación de la plataforma
[1/8 pulgadas (3mm) por cada 8 pies (2.4m)] de distancia de su hogar para el desagüe.
b. La subestructura debe tener por lo menos 2” (51mm) de distancia del gradiente.
c. El rodapié no obstaculice el flujo de aire debajo de la terraza.
3. Donde la ventilación sea mínima o esté obstruida... se debe agregar flujo pasante o ventilación de sofito alrededor del
perímetro de la plataforma para promover la ventilación cruzada bajo la subestructura con el fin de evitar la acumulación
de humedad.
4. Nunca adose la plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ a... cualquier superficie sólida, membrana impermeable,
concreto o plataforma existente.
Cómo Encofrar
Su Plataforma…
1. Use un mínimo nominal de 2”x 8” (51mm x 203mm)… en el tamaño de las viguetas para construcciones de estructura de
plataforma. Se recomienda la madera de marcos estampada KDAT (secado después de tratamiento), ya que típicamente
es más recta, liviana y fácil de manipular, y la misma no se encogerá ni expandirá tanto después de la instalación como la
madera sin tratamiento KDAT.
2. No use plataformas de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ como miembros estructurales... cuando vaya a construir
su plataforma.
3. Use un espaciado entre viguetas de 16” (406mm) en el centro... si la plataforma se va instalar en forma perpendicular
a la vigueta.
4. Use un espaciado entre viguetas de 12” (305mm) en el centro...
a. Si la plataforma se va instalar en ángulo a la vigueta (ángulo de 45 grados como máximo).
b. En áreas de tráfico intenso (por ej., patios de restaurantes, pasarelas de hoteles, entarimados públicos, etc.).
5. Confirme el espaciado requerido entre viguetas... con las agencias de código de construcción locales y estatales.

6. Si va a instalar equipamiento pesado en la plataforma... como por ejemplo una tina de baño, consulte al fabricante
del equipamiento para requerimientos específicos de marcos y soporte.
7. Instale la vigueta de marcos en forma vertical... con el lado de 2” (51mm) en contacto con la plataforma.
No instale la plataforma sobre marcos que hayan sido instalados en forma plana con el lado de 8” (203mm)
en contacto con la plataforma, ya que esto podría causar que escombros y humedad queden atrapados entre
el marco y la plataforma.
Cómo Usar la
Plataforma de la
Colección DuraLife™
Siesta™ como Peldaños
de Escalera...
1. No coloque tirantes más anchos de 12” (305mm) en el centro... cuando use la plataforma DuraLife™ Siesta™ como
peldaños de escaleras.
2. La saliente... para peldaños de escalera no debe excederse de 2” (51mm).

• De Lado a Lado... los sujetadores se espacian entre tablas automáticamente a 3/16” (4.8mm).
• De Extremo a Extremo... típicamente 3/16” (4.8mm) dependiendo del largo y temperatura de la tabla

Color Y Orientación
De Las Tablas De
Plataforma …
1. La plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ tiene un grano direccional... como resultado de ello,
la luz se reflejará de diferente manera en la superficie de la tabla dependiendo de la orientación del grano.
2. Para garantizar un color consistente en toda la plataforma... es vital mantener la misma orientación
de las tablas de plataforma durante la instalación.
3. Siempre disponga las tablas de la plataforma... antes de la instalación final para garantizar una mezcla
de color aceptable.
Nota: La superficie semi-lustrosa de la plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ se irá desgastando
hasta lograr un acabado mate natural con el tiempo.

Sujetadores…
Hay dos métodos... que se pueden usar para sujetar la plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™.
• El sistema de sujeción oculta Fastenator®... se puede usar con las plataformas de perfiles Acanalados de la Colección DuraLife™
Siesta™. Instale ganchos Fastenator® o bien con tornillos de cabeza recortada y atornillado recto N° 7 x 2 ¼” (57mm)). (Los
Ganchos Fastenator® con tornillos de cabeza recortada y atornillado recto N° 7 x 2 ¼” (57mm) están disponibles en su
distribuidor local de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™).
Nota: Almacene los Ganchos Fastenator® bajo techo antes de usarlos. Los Ganchos Fastenator se instalan mejor entre los 40°F y
los 80°F (4°C y 27°C).
• Los sujetadores tradicionales de plataformas de acero inoxidable “composite”... se requieren para la plataforma de perfil
clásico de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ y se usan para el borde de las tablas de perfil iniciales en una instalación de plataforma
de perfil acanalado.
1. Cómo Instalar plataformas de perfil Acanalado de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ usando el sistema de sujeción oculta Fastenator ®:
a. Instale una tabla de perfil inicial de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™... pre-taladrando y avellanando un agujero para tornillo a 5/8”

ubicación de vigueta usando tornillos de cabeza recortada y atornillado recto N° 8 x 2½” (63.5mm) b. No traslape... la tabla de perfil inicial de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ sobre las viguetas a más de 1” (25mm) a lo ancho y 2” (51mm) a lo largo.
c. Siempre coloque un sujetador oculto Fastenator®... en la ranura del borde de la tabla en cada vigueta, entre tablas de plataforma,
sin importar el espacio entre viguetas. (Se mantiene el espaciado de lado a lado... mediante los sujetadores ocultos Fastenator®).
d. Coloque un tornillo de acero inoxidable de N° 7 x 2 ¼” (57mm) ...
a través de la línea en el centro del gancho Fastenator® a un ángulo de 90° (o use un gancho Fastenator® con un tornillo pre-instalado
de cabeza recortada y atornillado recto N° 7 x 2 ¼” (57mm)).
e. Comenzando en un extremo... deslice la siguiente tabla Acanalada de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ sobre los Ganchos Fastenator®
expuestos de la primera tabla e instale un solo Gancho Fastenator® en un extremo del borde externo de la tabla para sujetar la tabla en
su lugar.
f. Mientras esté sobre la tabla nueva... golpéela firmemente con un martillo de goma anti-mella. Repita los pasos “c” a “f” para las tablas
restantes, instalando Ganchos Fastenator ® en cada vigueta.
g. Siempre haga sujeción expuesta en el borde más externo de la primera y última tabla... cuando use sujetadores ocultos Fastenator®.
Consejos Útiles:
• Use un martillo de goma anti-mella de ser necesario para colocar el Gancho Fastenator® en la ranura.
• También se puede usar un martillo de goma anti-mella o herramienta BoWrench™ para ayudar a asegurar la siguiente tabla
Acanalada de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ en su lugar.
• Si las viguetas están desparejas, aplique presión sobre la tabla de plataforma base donde la misma no toque la vigueta.
A medida que se aplique presión, golpee la tabla contra el Gancho Fastenator® usando el martillo de goma anti-mella.
• El uso de un cincel o destornillador ayudará a mantener el Gancho Fastenator® en su lugar cuando se engrape a la vigueta.
• En el caso de una vigueta baja, suplemente el Gancho Fastenator® según sea necesario para asentarlo en la ranura al borde de la tabla de plataforma.
• Tome una medida del ancho total de las tablas instaladas para asegurarse que las mismas estén paralelas cada 3-4 hiladas.
2. Cómo instalar terrazas de perfil clásico de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ con sujetadores de tornillos de acero inoxidable

los colores de plataformas de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™).

c. Dos sujetadores... son requeridos en cada vigueta, uno a cada lado de la tabla, sin importar el espaciado entre las viguetas.
d. C
lave los sujetadores en forma recta... directamente a través de las tablas de plataforma a un ángulo de 90 grados con
respecto a la superficie de la plataforma. No clave en forma oblicua ni taladre en ángulo.
e. Nunca coloque sujetadores... más cerca que 5/8” (16mm) del borde o extremos de la tabla.
f. Para obtener la mejor apariencia, use una línea de tiza blanca... para garantizar líneas de sujeción más rectas.
Pre-taladre y avellane... para el tamaño del tornillo.
1. La plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ NO debe extenderse a más de 2” (51mm)... más allá del marco en cualquier dirección.
2. Use una línea de tiza blanca... para proporcionar una línea de corte para encuadrar la plataforma.*
3. Use una sierra circular... para recortar los extremos de la plataforma de la Colección DuraLife™ Siesta™ a lo largo de la
línea de tiza.
*Precaución: La tiza de color puede manchar la plataforma base y puede ser difícil de quitar.

Instalación de Frontis
(Opcional)...

1. Sujete las tablas de frontis... usando como mínimo tornillos de cabeza recortada de acero inoxidable N° 8 x 2” (51mm). • Use tres sujetadores... uno en el medio y uno en cada lado de la tabla de frontis. Coloque los sujetadores a un mínimo de 1”
(25mm) del lado espaciado aproximadamente a 12” (305mm) en el centro. Coloque los sujetadores de los extremos a 1 ½”
(38mm) de los extremos de las tablas de frontis.
2. Cuando se instalen tablas de plataforma con estructura tipo marco... sujete la tabla de frontis a la vigueta de borde,
dejando una distancia de 1/8” (3.2mm) entre la parte superior del frontis y la parte inferior de las tablas de plataforma.
En las tablas de plataforma, no deben sobresalir las viguetas del borde exterior a más de 2” (51mm).
3. Cuando se instalen tablas de plataforma sin estructura tipo marco... recorte las tablas de plataforma para que corran más
allá de las viguetas del borde exterior a menos de 2” (51mm). Sujete la tabla de frontis a la vigueta de borde, dejando una
brecha de 1/8” (3.2mm) entre la parte superior del frontis y la parte inferior de las tablas de plataforma.
Nota: C
uando utilice frontis para cubrir viguetas más anchas de 11 ½” (292mm), puede apilar capas múltiples de frontis o usar
una combinación de tablas de frontis, tablas de plataforma y listones de 2x4 (51mm x 102mm) como acentos para crear
una apariencia única.
