This unit places in context attempts to advance the cause of the Pakistan Movement at a time when political developments were faltering

What were the origins, aims and main features of the Khilafat Movement?

Suggested Teaching activities

Construct a time line and place on this the origins and major events of the Khilafat Movement.

Draw an outine of a map showing the location of the Ottoman Empire

(Smith page 69 or Kelly page 64)

Construct a table with headings of: origins, aims and events. Construct a number of sentences to cover each of the headings on the Khilafat

Movement and issue to students who place the statements in the correct columns.

Students should discuss their findings to strengthen their understanding of each of these sections.

An exercise designed to develop their understanding of the difference between description and explanation should be set whereby they write a few sentences explaining why the Movement was formed (origins).

Failure and then list the reasons why the Movement failed.

An exercise designed to develop their understanding of the difference between description and explanation should be set whereby they write a few sentences explaining why the Movement failed.

Extension work: Students could be encouraged to consider to what extent the Movement failed or whether there were any successful effects.
