A comprehensive academic forum on ecology in China Disseminate new knowledge, exchange new ideas and present new findings China Ecological Forum (CEF), a comprehensive academic forum on ecology in China, aims to “disseminate new knowledge, exchange new ideas and present new findings” by holding academic activities such as lectures, thematic workshops, high-level seminars and focal forums. A comprehensive academic forum on ecology in China An academic exchange platform with great impact CEF serves as a bridge for academic exchange among policy makers, media, social groups and the ecological community in China, as well as a learning center for young scientists and students to explore ecological frontiers and focal topics. Since its launch in 2005, CEF has held 61 lectures, 11 thematic workshops and high-level symposia and forums , having brought together more than 160 well-known domestic and foreign experts and 6,000 participants, with a total number of 1,200 registered members. As a result, it has become an important platform on ecological academic exchange both in China and abroad. The presenters can select the topics themselves, focusing on the frontier or hot issues in the ecological arena to present the latest research findings or the current status on ecological conditions in China. It provides a good opportunity for participants to share their views and findings. 于贵瑞研究员在中国生态大讲堂“生态系统长期观测与试 验”研讨会上做报告。 中国生态大讲堂“生态系统长期观测与试验”研讨会 会场 A comprehensive academic forum on ecology in China ● High-level seminars High-level seminars are organized for young researchers and postgraduate students. For instance, CEF and Sino-Ecologists Association Overseas (Sino-Eco) held a high-level seminar on Eco Vision, inviting more than ten famous Chinese scholars from foreign universities/research institutions to present their insights on the future development of ecological study from an international perspective. ● Focal forum Domestic and international experts from relevant institutions and fields are invited to hold dialogue or discussion on special ecological topics. For instance, CEF has organized forums on the management of Poyang Lake water conservancy project and grassland management, which have attracted the attention of the international ecological community. forums on Poyang Lake water conservancy project and on grassland management, courtesy of 中国生态大讲堂“草原生态系统服务与管理政策” 的焦 点论坛(学生提问并表达不同观点) ● Them atic wo forums rkshops that hav , h e b e e n organ igh-level semi May 2006 nars an iz ed by C Scientific d focal issues and EF Dec. 200 m e thod 6 challenge of sustain L o n g -t e rm e c o s y s te ologies o n ecosyst em assess m o b s e rv ment in C a ti o n a n d hina e x p e ri m e n ta ti o n : a d d re s s in g th e ability Eco Visio n Dec. 200 7 New id e as, areas, Apr. 200 technolog 8 ies and m Climate c Basin ethodolog hange an ies on eco d ecosyst logical re em adapta search bility: a c Dec. 200 8 Intera ase study in c ti Y o n a s n g between h tze River Apr. 2009 uman acti Optimize vities and d ecosyst Dec. 200 e c osystem c em mana 9 Up-s hange gement b caling fro ased on o Apr. 2010 m ecolog bservatio ic a l n si Im and experi tes to eco pacts of h water bird -zones ment ydrologic s and their al projects response o f P o o y p a tions Jul. 2010 ng Lake onto the Grassland wetland a ecosystem Apr. 2011 reas and se rv ic Sino-Germ es and ma nagemen an subtro t policies pical fore sts conserv ation and sustainab le manag ement May 2007 Outcomes and impacts ● Publications Three volumes of the Publications on China Ecological Forum, sponsored by Higher Education Press, have been published since July 2009: Frontier Scientific Issues on Human Activities and Ecosystem Change (edited by Yu Guirui), Ecological Complexity and Eco Vision (edited by Wu Yegang and Fan Jiangwen), and Optimized Ecosystem Management Based on Observation and Experimentation (edited by Fu Bojie and Yu Xiubo). ● Policy briefs The key findings and ideas from the workshops, focal forums and lectures organized by CEF are summarized and published in the Newsletter on Ecosystem Research and Management (only Chinese version is now available). The newsletters are distributed free of charge to domestic government agencies such as MOST, MEP, MOA, SFA, CAS, as well as international organizations including UNEP, UNDP and WWF, to promote scientific policy making on ecological management. ● Media reports To date, Science Times of China has covered CEF over 10 times. Reports such as “Expecting a real assessment on the current status of ecosystems in China” (Edition 1, Jun. 28, 2006), “It’s time to focus on the grassland issues”( Editions 1-3, Nov.23, 2010), and “ The forest management level in China is declining sharply”( Edition 4, May 28, 2011) have caused a great stir in the domestic ecological community. In addition, the website of the Central People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China (www.gov.cn) also covered one of the focal forums of CEF titled “ CEF focuses on grassland ecology in China” (Jul. 26, 2010). Call for contribution and participation For the young researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students Please log on to t h e we b s i te o f C h i n e s e Ecosystem Research Network (www.cern.ac.cn), and register as a member of CEF to access the latest information on the events and the electronic copy of the Newsletter on Ecosystem Research and Management. For researchers from Synthesis Center, subcenters and ecological sites of CERN You are encouraged to recommend and invite well-known domestic and international ecological experts to make academic lectures and organize workshops or focal forums at CEF. For ecologists outside C E R N , e x p e r t s from international organizations and government officials Yo u a r e i n v i t e d t o present your latest findings and share the latest trends on ecosystem management policies through academic lectures or attending thematic workshops at CEF. For representatives from relevant domestic and international academic groups, NGOs and key programs/projects We encourage you to leverage the CEF platform to organize academic exchange activities including thematic workshops, high-level seminars and focal forums. CEF is committed to expanding its models and topics to further promote the exchange and cooperation between/among ecologists, policymakers, media and postgraduate students and ultimately advance international ecological study and ecological conservation efforts in China.
