Increasing Demand for Data: Operators are facing a drop in voice revenue across the region and an upsurge in global mobile data revenue . This drives a focus towards provisioning for LTE and 4G technology to allow them to be able to offer more robust data based value added services to their endusers. With more than 60% of internet access in Asia now done through mobile phones, this provisioning is necessary to be able to address an increasingly tech savvy consumer base. However, this rapid shift in data services translates to pressures for the Operator in terms of the need to invest in additional equipment, as well as in ensuring the optimization of the current equipment 2. Decreasing Average Revenue Per User (ARPU): Across Asia, fierce pricing competition is becoming the norm as subscriber growth slows down significantly. Competition is also strong in terms of product offering, and the numerous unlimited SMS, voice and data plans being offered to users place additional strain on CAPEX and OPEX, further decreasing the average revenue per user. An operator is faced with the challenge to stabilize OPEX with efficiency and optimization measures across the system, and minimize CAPEX by making the best use of the equipment they currently have. Contents Managing Customer Churn Reliability and Efficiency – Uptime is Crucial 6 The MSC as a Data Center HIgh Density Challenges and Opportunities 8 The NOC as a Data Center Maximum Visibility to Optimize Performance 10 Cloud Computing A Modular, Scalable Approach to Progressive and Cost Effective Growth 12 Emerson Integrated Solutions Grid to Chip Solutions for the Telecom Network 14 3. Critical Infrastructure Upgrades and Optimization: Operators are faced with the pressure of keeping up with constant technology changes and getting into technologies that they previously have little experience with. At the same time, they are faced with needing to maximize and protect their traditional telecom infrastructure investments such as mobile and wireline base stations, outside plants and BTS. In addition, Traditional switching centers and network operating centers are becoming high density data centers. Combined with the addition of Cloud services in their portfolio, operators are faced with the need to integrate this expertise into their organization to be able to ensure availability and efficiency in their network. Let us now look at the resulting infrastructure issues brought about by these trends in the industry, and how Emerson provides integrated solutions to address these. Emerson Solutions for the Telecom Network SingTel - Singapore Increasing deployment of blade servers within its EXPAN facility AIS - Thailand China Unicom - China Wanted to widen its coverage of its mobile services by building a new telecom infrastructure Decided to expand its GSM network capacity by building a new network power system for its equipment room Bharti Airtel - India Set to put up 3,344sqm raised-floor data center to upgrade and develop its networks 5 Managing Customer Churn Issue : Fierce competition, no barriers to switching The increasing level of competition and the availability of the latest gadgets have led to the consistent growth in demand for new services. Due to the market’s price-sensitivity, telecom operators are pressured to offer low-cost data plans in order to maintain subscriber loyalty. The low price environment has created virtually no barriers switching between operators and has significantly increased the amount of data traffic in data centers. Consequently, this has decreased the average revenue per user (ARPU). Operators have to ensure reliability for their subscribers by making sure their systems are always up and running. Downtime could lead to negative short and long-term implications that will further drive down revenues. Infrastructure Challenges : Reliability and Efficiency In order to maintain and improve the level of service, operators have to optimize their current infrastructure to ensure reliability and efficiency. To simultaneously keep up with the evolving demand for the latest services, however, operators must continue to invest in next generation technologies. Maintaining reliability is essential at all points in the network, from the mobile base stations up to the main switching centers and network operations center. Some challenges and opportunities throughout the existing network include: Efficiency in Power Consumption : Utilizing an efficient DC Power source Efficient Cooling Solutions for Shelters and Base Stations Flexible OSP Infrastructure and Containerized Solutions: Modular, efficient rollout Optimized Monitoring Use of Renewables 6 Emerson Solution: Integrated Telecom Infrastructure Solution for The Telecom Core and Outside Plant High Efficiency DC Rectifiers : Telecom providers are responding to skyrocketing energy prices, restrictions on carbon footprints, and an increased emphasis on corporate responsibility by increasingly looking for opportunities to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. But with demand for telecom services on the rise, reductions are difficult. These issues are leading to an increased focus on energy efficiency. Improving efficiency in the DC power plants that power the central office and outside plant can have a significant impact on telecom energy consumption. Outdoor Enclosures and Cabinets : Protecting and moving voice, video and data electronics closer to the subscriber - from outdoor enclosures for Radio Base Stations (RBS) and Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) or fiber pedestals and cabinets. Renewable and Hybrid Energy : Intelligent products that integrate multiple energy sources such as solar, wind, fuel cells, battery, generator and utility power configured for your application and designed to maximize energy savings, support environmental sustainability and provide advanced management within your network infrastructure. Monitoring Solutions: Monitoring units offer modular construction, extensive control capabilities, wide connectivity range, and a complete set of software functions that help enable effective site behavior and equipment performance throughout the telco network. Case Study Malaysia Key Issues: Network Availability and Optimization of Existing Equipment Situation: The company’s existing power system in its 2G base transceiver station (BTS) lacked the capacity and manufacturer support required to deliver the required availability Solution: Emerson’s Power Systems provided a solution that ensures high availability and scalability. This gave a high degree of flexibility, eliminated downtime of revenue generating operations, and has reduced battery replacement costs of UPS distributing systems Widest 3G & HSDPA coverage with 25 million subscribers 7 The MSC as a Data Center Issue : The MSC is Now A Data Center To improve revenues, the provision of Value Added Services (VAS) continues to be the core focus of telecom operators. This has led to a shift in the MSC environment from being a low density switching center to a high density data center. This has redefined both the organizational competencies needed to maintain an MSC as well as the infrastructure challenges that operators face in this landscape. Infrastructure Challenges : High Density = Heat As in a traditional data center, an increase in computing demand within the same limited space will result in a high density configuration. With the increasing budget squeeze of operators, there is usually difficulty in procuring funds to expand the actual MSC footprint, resulting in more and more equipment or computing power in the same limited space. This means that there is a real risk of increasing the heat in the MSC – which would then result in compromising the reliability of the equipment and ultimately of the network itself. In many cases, Operators rely on building air to cool their MSC, however building air is designed to cool people at the workspace – not the specific requirements of highly critical IT and Networking equipment . This inadequate cooling increases the risk of downtime for the MSC due to lack of proper humidity control, airflow management and 24/7 protection. 8 Emerson Solution: Adaptive Precision Cooling Solutions for The MSC As heat densities continue to rise with the proliferation of high-density configurations, server consolidation and server virtualization, air flow management is a growing concern. Fortifying a data center with building air or comfort cooling is no longer enough, and adopting a precision airflow management strategy suited for high-density computing is critical to maximizing efficiency and preserving availability by minimizing the occurrence of “hot-spots.” Row-based precision cooling solutions are ideal for MSCs with high-heat densities and growing IT infrastructures because they are uniquely equipped to deliver cooling directly to specific heat loads. They maximize efficiency by ensuring that capacity is utilized only where and when it is needed. In addition, some solutions, such as the Liebert CRV precision cooling system, use intelligent controls to dynamically scale capacity as IT needs dictate. In a virtualized environment, for example, this ensures cooling is available where the load is shifted Aisle containment configurations can further enhance airflow management by creating a partition between hot and cold air in the MSC. This partitioning increases the return air temperature to the row-based cooling systems. By doing so, a data center with intelligent row based cooling and cold aisle containment can achieve efficiency gains of up to 30 percent. According to a recent survey of the DCUG, more than 49 percent of data center managers have adopted or are planning to adopt cold aisle containment as an air flow management strategy. Case Study Vietnam Key Issues: Ensuring Availability For The MSC to support Mobile VAS Situation: Set to improve its current MSC due to cooling and power challenges that threatened the availability of its mission critical operations. Solution: Emerson’s Precision Cooling and Power Systems provided a reliable power supply that protects the equipment from power outages, and a cooling system that enables the management of a high density environment. This delivered clean power across the facility, ensured smooth communication services, optimized equipment performance and lifespan, and has improved operational efficiency 2nd largest mobile service provider with 25 million subscribers 9 The NOC as a Data Center Issue : The NOC is Evolving Into A Data Center A Network Operations Center, or NOC, is the primary workspace engineers utilize to monitor, manage and troubleshoot problems on a telecom network. The NOC provides a structured environment that effectively coordinates operational activities with all participants and vendors related to the function of the network. The amount and criticality of data that passes through a typical NOC, as well as the inherent requirement for 24/7 monitoring and proactive analysis and action reflects that of a high density data center. Infrastructure Challenges : Maximum Visibility to Optimize Performance As an information hub, the main infrastructure issue for the NOC is maintaining maximum visibility and optimizing performance through both immediate action and forward looking analysis and planning. Downtime created by isolated problems not diagnosed or not addressed correctly would ultimately affect the reliability of the entire network, and it is important not only to know that they are happening, but also if these issues are likely to happen, so that the proper investments and preparations can be made to avoid costly downtime. 10 Emerson Solution: Data Center Infrastructure Management Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) is a superset of infrastructure monitoring and encompasses the ability to manage the data center physical infrastructure to optimize data center resource utilization, efficiency and availability. DCIM includes management of the data center infrastructure layer (power, cooling and the physical space), the IT infrastructure layer, (compute, storage and communications equipment) and the gap between the two layers. By enabling management across the gap, data center operators have visibility into the true capacity of their IT and infrastructure systems, allowing them to manage closer to actual capacity, rather than the conservative estimates that leave some percentage of capacity unused as a buffer. Case Study Europe Key Issues: Emerson Network Power has identified four successive stages of DCIM progression: 1. Monitor and Access, which provides the ability to quickly react to potential problems in the data center infrastructure and improve management 2. Data Capture and Planning, in which data center personnel have the ability to automatically collect data about what assets are in the data center and where they are located, as well as how they are interconnected. 3. Analyze and Diagnose, which provides data center personnel with the ability to respond more quickly to changes in the infrastructure and manage more efficiently Distributed environment needing a single management view Situation: Optimize the central administration and power management of the devices in its eight data center located all across Europe Solution: Single, centralized management view in UK of all distributed data centers in EU Save £ 900,000 a year in data center IT man power costs Leverage immediate remote server troubleshooting and response Minimize data center hot spots and more efficiently manage power consumption 4. Recommend and Automate. The final stage of progression enables data center optimization by providing data center personnel with the visibility and control to optimize performance while maintaining or improving availability. With this level of progression, data center management becomes truly proactive. 11 Cloud Computing Issue : Cloud Computing Uptake The planned growth of telecom operators to improve VAS offerings, like Cloud, implies growth in the infrastructures needed to support these new services. However, it is hard to manage the growth in services when the IT infrastructure is not adaptive to the demands and progression of growth and expansion. Growth and expansion requires a design that is adaptive and flexible, and takes a build-as-you-grow-approach Infrastructure Challenges : Modular, Scalable Approach to Progressive and Cost Effective Growth Not knowing the uptake of these services poses a specific challenge – how does an Operator plan its infrastructure investments? There is a need for a design that is adaptive and flexible, while at the same time offering the level of reliability necessary to maintain customers. In addition, this build-asyou-grow rollout would need to prove to be cost effective for the Operator – in terms of resources and actual equipment investments. 12 Emerson Solution: Modular Housing Systems and Integrated Data Center Solutions For Cloud Deployment A cloud computing module involves multiple supporting systems, all dedicated to provide safe and reliable operating environment for the computing equipment.
