Macbeth – Essay Topics SEMESTER I Choose one of the following topics and write a three­argument literary essay. Your essay will consist of an introduction, three arguments, and a conclusion. You must include a cover page, in­text parenthetical citations, and a Works Cited page that follow M.L.A. format, which is outlined in the Centennial Communications Guide and on websites such as The OWL at Purdue. 1. The Role of Symbolism Symbols teach us about character(s) and/or theme(s). Examine up to three symbols in the play and explain how Shakespeare enhances elements of character or theme through these symbols. 2. Responsibility Is Macbeth responsible for his own downfall or is Macbeth’s downfall caused by outside influences? 3. Evil Women? Using examples from Macbeth, support the notion that women are portrayed as dangerous forces that emasculate and ruin men.
