1. Macbeth
You will be asked to write a theme-based piece of writing, using the criteria below. You need to
be familiar with the following themes as ONE of them will be on the exam:
Kingship vs. tyranny
Appearance vs. reality
Ambition
Gender
Add

Connect the given theme to the text of Macbeth. What
techniques does Shakespeare use to enhance this theme in the
text?
 Provide indirect evidence from the text; that is, you are
expected to refer to incidents/evidence/techniques used by
Shakespeare.
Your connection must be insightful and show that you are
thinking deeply about your reading and what we learned about
in class.
Connect
 You must make an additional connection between the theme
and something else.
 Your connection should show your understanding of how the
theme works and that it is universal.
 You must use well-chosen, relevant examples (at least 2)
from Macbeth to make EITHER a text-to-text, text-to-self, or
text-to world connection.

Remember that a perplexing question is one that is not literal
and fact-based, but instead requires making inferences, giving
an interpretation, thinking critically, and making judgments.
2. Poetry
You will be required to read a poem, annotate it according to our annotation process, and then
answer some inferential questions. Practice annotating with “The Circle Game”, by Joni Mitchell
(provided).
3. Essay
Topic: Multi-genre unit novel (there are two parts to this question so be sure to address both)
1. What techniques, in terms of plot, setting, characterization, point of view and craft of writing
(at least two examples), did the author of your novel use to maximize the impact of the
primary theme to readers? Please provide examples.
2. Evaluate which aspect from the above list was the most effective, and why.

*Minimum 7 paragraph essay

this outline to the exam, though not a full draft. You will
