In your group, read over the poem that you have been assigned. 2. Get a basic idea of the poem, a first impression of what it is about: – an overview – an emotion, atmosphere – diction (the kind of language that is used) 3. Take a closer look at the poem by breaking it into thought units such as stanzas, or even single lines. Consider: – the mood and how it is achieved – the connotation of words (what the words suggest as well as what they mean) – the major pattern of imagery – the sound of the words used – the repetition of words, parallel structure – the links between the stanzas and the function of each stanza in the poem (illustration, contrast, consequence) – the rhyming scheme (if there is one) – the rhythm of the poem 4. Establish a theme; you should be able to deduce one or more themes after doing number 3. It is certainly possible to have more than one theme in a poem, just remember that you must be able to support what you say with the poem itself. 5. Each time you make a point, support it with an example and an explanation of how the example is effective and why.
