(For each component, please specify what material will be taught during each session, how will the
material be taught, and what teaching materials will be used. Please also specify the overall format for the
course including expectations required for successful course completion)
Each trainee will be required to have successfully completed the Open Basic Skills module prior to starting this
module. All trainees will attend a single Wednesday morning session. During this session, an introduction to the
skills tasks and the curriculum will be afforded and an orientation to the video materials, the simulators, and the
scoring system will be provided. Trainees will view the FLS I, Southwestern Stations video tutorial and complete
a cognitive pre-test. After orientation, trainees will be expected to self-practice on the tasks, with data on
performance recorded for each repetition, until proficiency levels are reached for all tasks for the module.

2013-2014 TECHNICAL SKILLS COURSE OUTLINE
Training will be conducted in a self-study fashion and trainees will be encouraged to repetitively watch the video
tutorials during training to review appropriate techniques and tricks for performing the tasks. Proctors will be
available to assist in training and to provide additional feedback as needed.
Once a trainee has achieved proficiency on all tasks within the module, the trainee will notify the education
coordinator, who will verify achievement of proficiency for the module. The trainee will then schedule a 30
minute post-test session with the proctor and will perform one repetition of each task while being graded
according to proficiency levels by the proctor.
Trainees will be expected to view the SAGES MIS Biliary Basic Module and successfully complete the post-test
with a minimum score of 70%. (Neurosurgery residents are excluded from Biliary module)
Methods for giving feedback to learners (Formative and Summative):
Training will be conducted in a self-study fashion and trainees will be encouraged to repetitively watch the video
tutorials during training to review appropriate techniques and tricks for performing the tasks. Proctors will be
available to assist in training and to provide additional feedback as needed.
Methods of assessment of learners:
SCMIS established metrics for skills training
Methods for remediation:
Anyone who cannot achieve proficiency at post test on any of the tasks will be remediated. Remediation
consists of 10 additional repetitions of the task that meet criteria for proficiency. A remediation post test will be
given by a proctor. Retesting of that task must have a score of 90% of possible points to pass.
Anyone who does not achieve a 70% score or greater on the on-line SAGES MIS-Biliary Basic Module test will be
remediated by reviewing the on-line curriculum until 70% score is achieved.
Methods of course evaluation:
Post-test questionnaires completed by trainees at the end of the course and faculty evaluations of skills sessions
