Guidelines for COEN Advisors and Students proposing to Substitute or Waive ENGR 120
Substitutions:
Students may have taken a university course from another institution that may have filled or
partially filled the requirements for ENGR 120. In that case, the course taken previously may be
substituted, if appropriate and an academic adjustment made. This may be done via either (a) the
academic adjustment form or (b) an email to the department chair that is subsequently forwarded
with approval to degreeprogress@boisestate.edu. The advisor should discuss the content of the
course with the student and whether the course to be substituted contained oral/written
communication; data collection/analysis; leadership of a project or team. If the course partially
fulfilled the requirements, but the student has work experience that is relevant, a course
substitution that contains an additional paragraph of explanation as to the student’s additional
experience is warranted and should be added to the documentation.
Waivers:
In certain situations, ENGR 120 may be waived. This is only possible if the student is admitted to
Boise State University, meets the course prerequisites and the student is pursuing an engineering
degree at Boise State University. Following are guidelines for students and advisors to use in
formulating an academic adjustment that waives ENGR 120. The student needs to create a
petition that contains the information outlined below which should be submitted to their academic
advisor. The advisor will then attach the petition to the academic adjustment that is then
submitted to the dean’s office.
Student: If you desire to have ENGR 120 waived as a requirement, you must write a petition that
contains the following:





A copy of these guidelines.
A minimum of three years of relevant work experience (name of company/employer,
years of employment, titles of positions held).
Evidence of your ability to communicate effectively – this could take the form of providing
a copy of a report or other document you have authored; or documentation of
presentations made internally to the company or externally at technical meetings. Be
careful to not violate your company’s confidentiality expectations with the material you
provide in the petition – clear it with your supervisor if you are in doubt.
One example of your leadership of a project or a team. This should comprise about a
half-page explanation of the team/leadership experience.
One example of an initiative involving experimentation, data collection or data analysis
that you spearheaded or participated in to a significant extent (half-page write-up).
Advisors
Verify that the student meets the course prerequisites and is pursuing an engineering degree at
Boise State University. Verify that the petition contains the appropriate documentation. Prepare
an academic adjustment containing the student petition and submit it to the dean’s office (may
also be done electronically via email to the associate dean).
The academic adjustment form for substitutions and waivers is found on the registrar’s website,
see below; electronic adjustments are however accepted and encouraged.
