ABSTRACT
This activity sets new baseline post-SM4 sensitivity/throughput measurements for all the STIS/MAMA spectroscopic modes, and establishes if there
changes with respect to perfomance prior to the LVPS failure. It also checks the NUV focus of STIS and its dependence on wavelength.
OBSERVING DESCRIPTION
Visit 01: Perform a STIS/CCD Acquire of the standard star GRW+70D5824 with the F28X50LP filter, then exceute two STIS/CCD peakups in the
0.1X0.09 aperture and G230LB grating at 2375A in a crossed linear pattern. Then using the 52x2 aperture take two exposures, the first using the
STIS/FUV-MAMA and the G140L grating at 1425A, the second using the STIS/NUV-MAMA and the G230L grating at 2376A. Time required is 1
orbit.
Visit 02: Perform a STIS/CCD Acquire of the standard star AGK+81D266 with the F28X50LP filter, then take a STIS/CCD image through the
F28X50OII filter. Then using the 52X2 aperture take three exposures, the first with the G140M grating at 1567A, the second with the G140M grating
at 1173A, and the third with the G230M grating at 2818A. Time required is 1 orbit.
2
Proposal 11403 (STScI Edit Number: 2, Created: Friday, February 20, 2009 9:08:00 PM EST) - Overview
Visit 03: Perform a STIS/CCD Acquire of the standard star BD+28D4211 with the F29X50LP filter, then take a series of 5 exposures with the
0.2X0.2 aperture as follows;
STIS/NUV-MAMA and E230H grating at 2263A
STIS/FUV-MAMA and E140M grating at 1425A
STIS/FUV-MAMA and E140H grating at 1416A
STIS/NUV-MAMA and E230M grating at 1978A
STIS/NUV-MAMA and E230M grating at 2707A
Time required is 2 orbits.
Due to guide star visibility issues during SMOV for a May launch we need to replace GRW+70D5824, the new visit is 05, target GD153. If there is a
launch delay switch to visit 04, target GD71. Both visits 01 and 04 are left on HOLD for May launch.
CALIBRATION JUSTIFICATION
This activity resumes sensitivity monitoring of each MAMA spectroscopic mode to enable detection of any change due to contamination or other
causes. The objective is obtain exposures in FUV and NUV low-resolution, medium-resolution and echelle modes to determine the post-SM4 STIS
spectroscopic sensitivity, re-establish a baseline for contamination/sensitivity monitoring, and evaluate changes in the sensitivity since the STIS side2 LVPS failure.
Focus monitoring at NUV wavlengths is also performed using the ACQ/PEAK and CCD/G230LB mode with the 0.1X0.09 aperture. The target is
stepped in a crossed linear pattern to enable measurement of the focus (PSF) in the cross-dispersion (spatial) direction as a function of UV
wavelength. The focus is also monitored in imaging mode by observing AGK+81D266 with the F28X50OII filter and CCD.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Execute after the CCD target acquisition activity (STIS-13/11388) and the FUV (STIS-23/11393) and NUV (STIS-24/11394) MAMA Image Quality
activities. Execute after the end of the BEA period.

Diagnostic Status: Warning
Scientific Instruments: STIS, STIS/FUV-MAMA, STIS/CCD, STIS/NUV-MAMA
Special Requirements: SCHED 100%; ON HOLD
Comments: Throughput check of STIS using the G140L (FUV-MAMA) and G230L (NUV-MAMA) gratings observing the standard star GRW+70D5824, and measurement of the focus (PSF) in the cross-dispersion
direction using two ACQ/PEAK observations in a crossed linear pattern.
On Hold Comments: Given a May launch for SM4 the use of the BASE1BR is causing the guide star problem in the weeks of SMOV. Because this program executes early in SMOV, FGS2 will not yet be available so
this program will need a pair of FGS1&3 guide stars. As a result, guide star coverage is missing during the time needed for this program. We therefore put this visit on hold See Visit 05 for the alternative.
(Exposure 1 (Visit 01) special requirements) Warning (Form): The specified GS Acq Scenario is not in the current list of valid scenarios.
