Tree grading is based upon the butt log and will follow general guidelines for factory logs described in U.S.D.A. Forest Service General Technical Report NE-1, 1973, A Guide to Hardwood Log Grading. Also reference U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Eastern Region, Timber Management Field Guide, Page 1.31a., Guide For Hardwood Tree Grading Based on Butt Log. Tree grading will be optional for timber sales cruised under marking and cruising contracts.
