Ottawa National Forest timber cruisers will tree grade sugar maple and yellow birch on timber
sales where hardwoods compose the majority of the sale volume. Tree grading is based upon the
butt log and will follow general guidelines for factory logs described in U.S.D.A. Forest Service
General Technical Report NE-1, 1973, A Guide to Hardwood Log Grading. Also reference
U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Eastern Region, Timber Management Field Guide, Page 1.31a., Guide
For Hardwood Tree Grading Based on Butt Log.
Tree grading will be optional for timber sales cruised under marking and cruising contracts.
