Environmental Policy Statement
The mission of the Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the
Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. This is
captured by our motto, “Caring for the Land and Serving People.” To fully accomplish our
mission, we must be good environmental stewards in our daily practices.
The Intermountain Region of the Forest Service is committed to protecting human health and the
environment and conserving natural resources. We shall conduct our operations in accordance
with the following standards:

We know and comply with the letter and intent of applicable environmental laws,
regulations, and policies in our strategic and project planning, and in project
implementation.

We work together with other federal and state agencies, American Indian Tribes,
and the public to create and maintain conditions under which people and nature
can exist in productive harmony, and fulfill the social, economic, and other
requirements of present and future generations.

We employ energy and water conservation practices and conserve resources by
substituting environmentally friendly products where possible, by preventing
pollution, and by practicing the “3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”
We will assess compliance with environmental standards by conducting periodic audits. We will
establish and review environmental targets, and will strive for continual improvement in our
environmental performance. We will communicate this policy to employees and the public.
Environmental compliance, protection and conservation are everyone’s responsibility.
