Brno University of Technology is the second largest and second oldest technical university in the
Czech Republic. Its history goes back to 1849, when the Czech-German Technical Institute was established in Brno. Then in 1899, after fifty years, the Technical University providing instruction in the Czech language was founded. In the first ten years of its existence, it ranked among the best technical universities not only in Central Europe but also across the continent. During World War II the University was closed, like all other Czech universities.
In 1951, the University was abolished and the Military Academy occupied its place. However, very soon the necessity of the restoration of the civil technical university in Brno became apparent and, since 1956, it has gradually been extended. At present the University has 7 faculties, more than
13 998 students and approx. 1 000 members of the academic staff. The University offers a wide
2
2nd WTA-International PhD Symposium variety of courses not only in engineering but also in applied sciences, business and management, architecture and even in fine arts.
The Faculty of Civil Engineering is situated in the centre of Brno and with an enrolment of over
3,000 students; it is the largest faculty of the Brno Technical University. Studies in this faculty last five years and are completed by the final state examination. The final state examination consists of the defense of a thesis or design and an oral examination before the state examination board.
The Faculty offers the following study programmes: bachelor study programmes, master study programmes and doctoral study programmes for different field specialization.

Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic (see link: http://www2.brno.cz/index.php?lan=en ). Thanks to its metropolitan character, its advantageous position and significance, the city is now the natural centre with a concentration of approximately
250 000 people. Brno lies at the height of 223 meters above sea level at the confluence of the
Svratka and Svitava Rivers, and this region mainly features fertile ravines in the river area and consequently it is one of the places in our country with the oldest history.
Its position was predetermined as a crossroads for trade routes. The first recorded mention dates back to the year 1091. After the city was successfully defended against the Swedes during the Thirty
Years War, Brno became the capital of Moravia. The era of Napoleonic Wars was marked in Brno´s history by the battle of the Three Emperors, fought in the nearby town of Slavkov-Austerliz. In the
19th century Brno experienced rapid development and was a very important industrial centre of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the 20th century this substantial growth and all-round development continued and Brno became one of the country's most important centre of business, industry, science, technology, education and arts in Central Europe. In 1993 Brno celebrated its 750th anniversary. Brno is a traditional centre of international trade, the meeting point of Western, Central and Eastern Europe. The Brno International Trade Fair and Exhibition Centre, with about 50 mostly international trade fairs and exhibitions held on its premises every year, is closely linked to the Brno
World Centre (see link: http://www.bvv.cz/homepage-gb ).

(Reduta is one of the oldest theater buildings in Central Europe), but Janacek´s and Mahen´s Theatres are among the best contemporary ones. Cultural visitors would also find here a philharmonic orchestra, a series of chamber and choral bodies, dozens of museums and art galleries, an astronomical observatory, a botanical garden, a ZOO and other cultural and social facilities that offer great opportunities for entertainment and a rich cultural and social life.
