Assignment 1

NOTE : For assignments:

Please name your files: “FirstName LastName Assignment# Course & # year.file type”

Please include the assignment request/question in your email to your PI so that the PI is aware of the assignment request/question.

Due Tuesday 8/26 by 5pm:

1a. Email me & cc your PI the following:

Project title,

PI reviewing & editing your work,

Bibliography program you will be using,

Email address that you would like me to use to contact you and whether or not you are willing to share it with the rest of the class. Why share your email address? So that: i) I can send out class wide emails for assignment clarifications

& other course information; and ii) you and your classmates can email each other for questions or clarifications on lectures, class notes, assignments or course subject matter.

Due by 9/1 before class:

1b. Identify the top 5 journal articles related to your research & top 5 journals in which you can publish. This means that you will need to do a literature search and, if you have done a literature search, it should have been done very recently.

1c. Read “How to Write a Research Paper ”, Mike Ashby Engineering Department,

University of Cambridge, Cambridge 6th Edition, April 2005. It is posted on the course website.

Provide your PI with the following & cc me (Due by 9/1 before class):

1d. Bibliography library containing references that are most prevalent and up to date for your research. The minimum number of references is 5 (see 1b). This means that you will need to do a literature search and, if you have done a literature search, it should have been done very recently. Include the Impact Factor of each journal.

1e. Using the bibliography program, create an MSWord document (or LaTeX) listing the

5 journal articles (see 1d) as references using the format used by a relevant journal for your work. (e.g., Journal of Applied Physics , IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices ,

IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology , NanoLetters , Nature Materials , etc. ). You will need to go to the website of the journal or obtain a paper from the journal to find the format used by the journal. Include the Impact Factor of each journal.
