Lectures of course covering 6 of Kasap and Problem Set 10

• p-n homojunctions, bipolar transistors, Metal-semiconductor junctions, and governing equations (e.g., Poisson’s equation, charge neutrality equation)

Learning Objectives: For the quiz, the student should know how to:

Draw the band diagrams and FULLY LABEL EVERYTHING for the following homojunctions in the conditions of flat band, equilibrium, forward bias, reverse bias: o p-n o n-p o n-p-n o p-n-p

Include both ohmic and Schottky contacts to the previously mentioned band diagrams

Draw the band diagrams of bipolar transistors (i.e., n-p-n and p-n-p) and explain how bipolar transistors work

Determine if a bipolar transistor is a majority or minority carrier device

Describe how doping differences between the n- and p- side of a p-n junction changes the depletion region and the flat band voltage (i.e., built-in voltage)

Write down and define all variables of the charge neutrality equation for a p-n junction.

Write down Poisson’s equation and define all variables

Explain the concept of Poisson’s equation

Apply Poisson’s equation to any depletion region (i.e., space charge region) in any junction to calculate the electric field and the voltage in the depletion region

Show that Poisson’s equation is a force-energy relation

Write down the relationship between energy and voltage and define all variables
