Assistive Technology Development
About the Program
SPONSORS:
About 15 “seed money” awards for up to $500 will be awarded for the 2012-2013 academic
year. The funds must be used for materials and supplies consumed in design, fabrication
and testing of assistive technology.
The purpose of the program is to foster the design, fabrication and development of assistive
technology to empower people with disabilities.
Eligibility

The project must involve the development of assistive technology. Applications for
all assistive technology will be considered, but preference will be given for
technology intended to impact the occupational potential of a client.

Student teams must be enrolled in a design course in a (United States) Engineering
or Technology department at a college or university.

Each institution may submit a maximum of three applications per year.

Students teams must be supervised by a faculty member.
Application Requirements
A 3-page maximum proposal (12 pt font, Times New Roman) will include the following:

Project objective — a description of the functional need(s) for the device that is
to be developed and for whom (and how) such a device or system will empower the
intended person(s).
Work scope — a narrative describing the work to be completed by the project team
to design, fabricate and test the assistive device or system.

Schedule — a description of the project time table.
4.
Budget — a description and justification for the requested funds.
5.
Other funding — identify other sources of funding, if any.
6.
Project Team — identify the students and faculty involved with the project.
7.
External collaboration — description of individuals or organizations external to the
university, such as non-profit agencies, that will provide advice to the design team.
Submission information
Applications for financial assistance are accepted on a rolling deadline, i.e. applications will
be considered for funding until the funds are depleted. Award details are available on the

Application Review & Award Notification
The application review committee will consist of ASEE/DEED members and NISH
officials.
Applicants will be notified of a decision 7-10 days following submission. Checks will be
sent to the faculty advisor shortly thereafter.

Design Challenge
Network
Program participants are strongly
encouraged to enter the AbilityOne
Network Design Challenge. Cash Prizes up to $10,000 are awarded, with
matching amounts given to the
educational institution’s department.
2013 ASEE Annual Conference!
Program participants will be invited to
attend the Design in Engineering
Education Division’s special panel
session and/or workshop at the 2013
Annual conference and exhibition in
Atlanta, Georgia. (The award is not
contingent upon attendance of the
conference.)
Recipients of funding will be asked to
submit a brief summary of work
completed on or before May 31, 2013.
