and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) made possible, in part, by a grant from the US Department of Labor
Certificate in
Sustainable Use of Renewable Energy (SURE)
Sustainable Use of Renewable Energy (SURE) is a certificate program offered by the
Manufacturers Association of Central New York (MACNY) in cooperation with the SUNY
College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF). Potential participants include
designers, architects, constructors, and consulting engineers who want to learn more about
the current technology and business applications of renewable energy systems including
photovoltaics, wind power and biomass and conversion to biofuels. This certificate program
was developed through a collaborative effort between business and academia to take
advantage of this region’s unique expertise and resources.
Business Focus
The incorporation of renewable technologies for energy production is an emerging
business and environmental opportunity for New York State and the world. This is
especially true for the engineering and construction industries since forms of renewable
energy are at the heart of cost-saving construction planning and cutting edge
developments to reduce energy consumption on a large scale. Central New York (CNY) is
rich in natural resources such as forests, agricultural products, and wind, and is home to a
workforce that has the technological know-how to develop these resources into sustainable
energy systems. Alternative energy producers and associated entrepreneurial activities
such as developing bio-based products have the potential to greatly contribute to economic
development in the CNY region.
Environment for Success
The SURE certificate instructors include leading industry experts throughout the region as well as
recognized scholars from SUNY-ESF. The program Curriculum addresses:
State-of-Art of the Energy Source
• Fundamentals of chemical and physical processes underlying the technology
• System components
• Technical feasibility and limitations forecast for technical improvements over
next 1-5 years
Current Business Practices Employing Alternative Energy Source
• Case studies showing places where technologies/systems have been deployed,
particularly in NY and Northeast US
• Economic calculations: Return On Investment, Payback period
• Locations where equipment/systems may be purchased
• Challenges for business implementation
Government
• Federal, State, and Local financial incentives
• NYS Portfolio standard and NYSERDA programs
This certificate program will be offered in both October 2006 and March 2007 and may be
completed within one month.

Participants may
• Earn a MACNY Certificate upon completion of all three (3) workshops
• Register for one or more individual workshops
• Earn Professional Development Hours (PDHs)
• Earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Workshops Will Apply to Re-licensing for Professional
Engineers (PEs) and Architects
Attendees are expected to earn 7 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for each workshop
he/she attends for a total of 21 PDHs. Earned PDHs count toward the required New York Statemandated professional development training for engineers. Each workshop provides (0.7) CEUs for
professional architects, depending upon professional licensing requirements.
PLEASE NOTE: Attending the same workshop twice will not earn additional PDHs or
CEUs.
