Justification for CAS Stacks Manager position
Nature of the position’s duties:
Responsible for overall supervision and management of all Central Access Services collection
maintenance and bookstacks functions in the Main Stacks and potentially the Oak Street Library
Facility. Assists in other CAS areas as needed.
Number of FTE in each of the other staff categories in the unit (indicating which are
funded with permanent dollars and which are on temporary funding):
1 LOA, 4 LS, 1.5 LA
This represents a decrease from previous staffing levels of 1 LOA, 1 SLS, and 2 LS positions in
the past 2 years while maintaining the same level of responsibility for daily operations and an
increase in project management activity.
General scope of responsibility of those positions:
LOA oversees bookstacks office functions.
LS positions work in collection maintenance (including overseeing shelving, shifting, shelf
reading, and transfers) and bookstacks functions including stacks records maintenance.
LA positions assist with collection maintenance and bookstacks office functions.
Relation of the proposed position to the academic, administrative, and service programs of
the campus.
CAS has stewardship responsibility for the largest collection in the UIUC Library system and
consistent professional leadership focused on the Main Stacks is essential to collection access,
new service initiatives, project management and providing patrons with an environment
conducive to scholarly activities.
Goal 1: Strengthen our ability to provide content in all formats and enhance access for Library
users.
Physical access to the collections is an integral component to properly facilitate efficient and
effective access to all library materials. The Main Stacks Manager position will have a great
impact on the delivery of effective patron services to students, faculty, and staff throughout the
library system with responsibility for managing all collection maintenance and bookstacks
activity within CAS. All aspects of this position are essential for enhancing access, and the
position will fill a critical void in service provision.
Goal 2: Strengthen our services to meet the changing library needs of today’s and tomorrow’s
faculty and students. (Improve facilities to protect the Library’s content and to meet the needs of
the Library’s users.)
Protecting the library’s content by paying close attention to collections management, records
management, and remote storage issues and proactively managing the collection is an essential
function of this position.
Please indicate whether this is a new position or a replacement resulting from a retirement
or resignation. The responsibilities of the person in this position essentially expand those
previously held by Betsy Kruger as the Head of Central Circulation and Bookstacks and in part
by Gil Witte who moved to IPM. Additionally, this position includes more focus on all aspects
of stacks management than we are currently able to provide.
.
Describe the impact on the Library of not filling this position indefinitely or delaying it for
some months.
No one will be available to completely focus attention on the many areas of the main stacks that
need improvement. This includes overseeing the collection management and records
management functions of the stacks as well as significant project management activity. This also
includes moving forward with larger initiatives and big picture planning. This will especially be
the case when the current Head of CAS position expires.
Finally, note what opportunities exist for obtaining external funding for the position.
