Installing Respondus
Note: Respondus is only available for a Windows PC and is not currently available for the MAC.
To install Respondus:

Go to https://www.wiu.edu/westernonline/respondus
Click the Download button to download the respondus.exe file.
Open Respondus and enter the information from the website.
- Institution Name
- Local Support Contact(s)
- Installation Password
*Note: If you already have Respondus installed you will need to change the Current
Personality to Desire2Learn on the Start tab.
Preparing Quiz Questions in Word
Respondus will import multiple choice, true-false, paragraph, short answer, matching and multiple
response questions. The file must be organized in the “Standard Format” to be recognized.

Open the Word file and Save As... a different name to preserve your original quiz file.
Strip all Header and Footer information.
Strip all headings and subheadings in the body of the document so that only the questions
remain.
Make sure each question is numbered.
- Each question must begin with a question number followed
by either a period “.” or a parentheses “)”.
Re-format each question to adhere to the Standard Format of each question type (see “Format
Examples” on page 5).
Tip: Turn off Auto-Format
Word 2003
Select Tools > AutoCorrect Options. Click on the AutoFormat tab and click off the list styles, bulleted
list, and paragraph styles options under Apply. Repeat the action on the AutoFormat as you Type tab.
Word 2007
Click the office Button at the top left and click the Word Options button at the bottom. Next, select
Proofing > Auto Correct Options button. Choose the Auto Format tab and uncheck Built-in Headings
styles, Automatic bulleted lists, List styles, and Other paragraph styles. Click OK.
Word 2010
Select the File tab, at the top left select the Options button at the bottom. Next, select Proofing > Auto
Correct Options button. Choose the Auto Format tab and uncheck Built-in Headings styles, Automatic
bulleted lists, List styles, and Other paragraph styles. Click OK.

Open Respondus and click the Start tab.
Click the Current Personality pull down menu and select your course platform.

Importing Questions from a Word Document
Now that you have formatted your word document correctly, you are ready to import your questions
into Respondus.

From the Start tab, click Import Questions. The import dialogue box will appear.
Select the file to import:
- Select the Type of File > Rich Text or Microsoft Word
- Browse to locate the File Name from your local drive.
Choose where to add the new Questions.
- Click Create a New Document and give the quiz a name.
(This will become the Quiz Title in your course.)
- Click Exam or Survey.
- If you did not title each question on the source document,
click on Use stem plus question number to create titles and
type in a stem name.
Preview the quiz.
Click Finish. Import progress and errors will display at the bottom of the dialogue box.
Editing Questions
• Go to the Edit tab.
Click on a question title in the Question List.
• Click on Modify.
- Make any changes to the Title, Question, and Answer Wording.
- Apply Bold, Italic or Underline as needed to Question, Answer or Feedback wording with
toolbar buttons.
- Edit or add General Feedback.
- Verify or change the Correct Answer.
- Verify or change the Point Value.
• Click on Preview.
Click on Save Changes.
Adding New Questions
• Go to the Edit tab.
• Click on the selected question type at the left of the screen (e.g., Multiple Choice).
• Give the question a unique title and complete the remaining ques- tion fields.
• Click on Add to End of List or Insert into List.

Go to the Edit tab.
Click on a question title in the Question List.
Click on Modify.
- Click on Move or Delete.
Set Quiz Settings
You can set these in Respondus or wait and set these in the course after you publish. These settings will
depend upon your selected Course Per- sonality (e.g.,Vista as shown below).

Go to the Settings tab.
- Set up Question Sets as needed.
- Set Basic Settings and Availability.
- Set Security and Submission feedback.
- Set Results options.
Preview and Publish
• Go to the Preview and Publish tab.
• Click on Preview.
- Click Next and Previous to move through items.
- Click on Modify Item to make any corrections.
- Edit the item and click on Save Changes to return to the preview.
- Close the preview.
• Click on Publish to Desire2Learn and click the Publish Wizard button.
- Select Publish to a Single Course.
- Select Add New Server if this is the first time you are publishing. (You will only need to do this once)
- Choose Yes, check for preconfigured server settings then
click Next.
- Complete the Description, Login and Password fields. (Use
your ECOM login information)
- Click Next, click Next again, then click Finish.
• Now that you have set up the server, click the Next button to continue.
• Choose your class from the Group or Section drop-down menu.
• The rest can be left alone.
• Click Next.
• In the next window, wait for it to say Completed Successfully, then click Finish.
• Now you can login to your online course and preview the quiz.
• In Respondus, Save and Close your Respondus project (.rsp) for future editing or publishing.
• Exit Respondus.
