HOPE COLLEGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TECHNOLOGY TEAM
August 28, 2007
Members present: Susan Cherup, Stephanie Pasek, Chris Bowen, Jason Becker, Jen Ivanoff, Andrea
Dahm, Katie Oxendine, Jason Folkert, Ashley Gruenberg, and Ben Herrman.

1. E-Portfolio 2: Chalk and Wire announced that the release of E-Portfolio 2 has been delayed
at least another 10 days.
2. Regular Meeting Times: To accommodate members’ schedules, a regular meeting time of
Thursdays at 8:00 pm was set. Stephanie will call meetings as needed.
3. Meeting With Classes: Previous plans to meet with Ed 225 and Ed 453 will have to be
delayed until the release of E-Portfolio 2.
4. Classroom Assignments: Members were assigned to all education classes to provide
support. The results are below.
It was noted that all classes meeting in the Anderson-Werkman Financial Center are meeting
in other classrooms.
5. Tech Lab Liason: Andrea Dahm will be our liason to help keep their staff informed and
trained especially as E-Portfolio 2 comes out this semester, since many students use the
library’s tech lab as a resource.
6. T-shirts: T-shirt designs for the tech team will be designed this week with all ideas being
presented at the next meeting on September 12th.
7. E-Portfolio
7.1 Reflective Piece: We support students writing reflective experiences about chalk and
wire and how they used their portfolios.
7.2 Appropriate Pictures: Considering that chalk and wire portfolios have been found
containing pictures of future teachers with alcohol, all students should be reminded of
their choice of pictures. Also pictures that are silly or otherwise non-professional should
be discouraged.
We also discussed that employers have even checked applicants myspace and facebook
accounts. Students are accountable for the information that they put online and should
be proactive about keeping it appropriate.
7.3 Labeling Artifacts: All students should rename deposited artifacts with meaningful
names. As the classes pile up students have accumulated meaningless files making
portfolio assembly very difficult. Chris explained that many students do not use folders
to organize files, which should be encouraged.
7.4 Templates: Some templates are better than others. We discussed which templates are
not functioning properly and which are aesthetically lacking. Main considerations are
ease of navigation, color scheme, readability, and functionality.
7.5 Sharing Portfolios: Although we have always discouraged sharing portfolios, professors
discovered the first documented abuse of the system, where a student lifted a lesson plan
from a previous year’s student and used it as their own. All students should unshare their
portfolio, and should be advised of the consequences of plagiarism.
