appear in the table. For each of them, if you square
the x coordinate and add 1, it gives the y coordinate.

This starter can be used in a lesson on calculating points on a quadratic graph
or as part of a lesson on correct use of a calculator – it isn’t always easier to use
a calculator.
• Students need to have used equations of
graphs before doing this starter.
• Students often go wrong with squaring
negative numbers. Some calculators will
give -8 as the answer to
