The Plant
The Brunsbüttel gas turbine power plant
comprises four light heating oil-fired turbines
each supplying 64 MW. Brought on stream in
1973/74 by Vattenfall Nuclear Energy, the
power plant provides the third-party network
feed for the neighboring nuclear power plant. It
also provides the 10 kV reserve feed in the
event of failure of the transmission network or
of the 380 kV network connection of the
Brunsbüttel nuclear power plant turboset. In
addition to this, tertiary control power for the
plant is becoming increasingly relevant.
turbo set to SPPA-T3000/SPPA-R3000 the
coupling to the I&C technology was realized
via bus.
The SES excitation systems have an intuitive
control unit which greatly simplifies commissioning and, after transition to commercial
operation, also greatly facilitates monitoring,
service operation and troubleshooting.
In addition to supplying the complete THYRIPOL
excitation systems, the contract included adapting the interface to the old system and interlocking for the 'Unger' startup concept. The excitation system was delivered in individual transport units due to the restricted routes on site.
The Siemens expertise as well as the flexibility
of the solutions were demonstrated by the
spatial and functional modification of the
THYRIPOL excitation systems to the individual
needs of the plant.
The Task
Maximum starting reliability was the aim of
the project. This requires excitation systems
that adapt perfectly to the existing situation
and ensure maximum availability with
innovative technology.
The particular challenge in this modernization
project at Brunsbüttel was to always keep two
of the four excitation systems permanently
ready for use, to ensure that there would be no
interruptions in availability of the emergency
feed for the nuclear power plant.
Our Solution
The Brunsbüttel gas turbine power plant was
modernized unit by unit with SES Excitation
Systems type THYRIPOL of the product range
of SPPA-E3000.
The interfaces of the new excitation systems
with the plant were adapted to it in a way, that
made the reuse of most of the existing cabling
possible.
Furthermore, through the modernization of the
control room and the control equipment on the
“The excitation system and the new
control system have been commissioned to the full satisfaction
of Vattenfall. The ease with which
the system is operated was demonstrated during commissioning.
Vattenfall would like to thank for
the successful co-operation.”
