Academic Paraprofessional --Special Education
General Purpose: To teach within the regular instructional environment through consultation and/or collaboration and/or
co-teaching, with assigned regular education teachers, to provide modifications and accommodations per students’ IEPs;
responsible for managing a student caseload of 20 to 40 students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following statements regarding this exempt level position consist of duties, responsibilities, frequency, and
percentages describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the leader filling this position. To perform

● Teach students to ensure academic, social-emotional, and workforce readiness growth and success.
● Completes in a timely, accurate manner, roster and caseload reports, as required by the Special Education
Department
● Completes documentation, tracking, and charting required quarterly to measure progress on student IEPs per the
schedule established by the school.
● Continually monitors and adjusts students’ instruction through the use of differentiation in such a manner as to
enable the student to demonstrate proficiency toward state standards.
● Differentiates instruction and curriculum to meet individual student needs
● Uses a variety of assessments to create a body of evidence to verify student achievement toward mastery of
standards
● Provides/coordinates and documents progress monitoring to develop a body of evidence for special education
eligibility determination
● Takes personal responsibility for IEP compliance (i.e. notice of meetings, timeline waivers, parental safeguards,
accurate and timely completions of IEP including present levels of performance and required signatures)
● Facilitates/participates in IEP meetings. Provides clear, supportive, and accurate information to parents
● Coordinates/administers and documents progress monitoring of IEP goals in order to accurately complete
quarterly progress reports to disseminate to parents.
● Collaborate with the GOAL leadership staff to support data-based decision-making to promote student
achievement and alignment among curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
● Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, parents, and GOAL staff to enhance the
instructional environment.
● Maintain a high level of communication (both verbally and in writing) with other GOAL staff, students, and
parents to deliver program information and address individual student needs.
● Maintain up-to-date, accurate, effective and efficient record keeping procedures.
● Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, staff, and community.
● Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits, such as: meeting deadlines, honoring schedules,
coordinating resources and meetings in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others.
● Assist in student recruiting and retention.

Minimum Requirements:
Education:
● Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required. Masters degree in Special Education preferred.
Certification:
●
Enrollment in a Colorado Special Education Teacher Licensure program by 7/1/16 required (must be completed
by 7/1/18). Valid Colorado Special Education Teacher License or endorsement in special education preferred.
● Highly Qualified as a Colorado Secondary Educator (e.g., Math, English, Science, Social Studies), Colorado
Teaching licensed and/or additional Highly Qualified areas preferred.
Experience:

Two years of experience working as teacher or paraprofessional in a school required. Online teaching experience
preferred.
● Two years of experience working with students with special needs preferred.

Advanced knowledge of different learning styles and challenges and the ability to apply them to learners in a
blended learning environment.

Advanced technological abilities. Able to competently and persistently apply problem solving skills towards
technology issues.
Well-versed in conflict resolution skills. Ability to mediate conflicts (e.g., between students, staff, parents, or
community members) while promoting the core values of GOAL effectively among all stakeholders.
Superior understanding of Colorado’s special education regulations and requirements.
Advanced knowledge of special education data analyses, collaborative decision-making, relationship building,
group facilitation, conflict management, problem-solving, as well as resource allocation and prioritization.
Understands the benefits of continuous learning and takes personal responsibility for professional development.
Ethical, honest, and good-humored.
