PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Harford Community College cooperates with the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC)-Catonsville Campus to prepare students for positions with surveying firms, government, and engineering/ construction firms as office technicians performing data reduction, basic design, and computer aided drafting. HCC offers core courses to prepare students for transfer to CCBC–Catonsville to complete the degree program. CCBC–Catonsville awards the Associate of Applied Sciences Degree upon successful completion of the program. Students who elect this curriculum and desire to transfer courses to a four-year institution should check with the CCBC program coordinator and/or an academic advisor. While many courses will transfer, certain specialized courses may not. Courses may be taken in any sequence as long as prerequisites are met. Some courses may be offered in alternate semesters only. Increasing demand for fast, accurate, and complete geographic information will be the main source of growth for these occupations. In addition to openings from growth, job openings will continue to arise from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations or who leave the labor force altogether. Many of the workers in these occupations are approaching retirement age. Opportunities for surveyors and cartographers should remain concentrated in engineering, surveying, mapping, building inspection, and drafting services firms. However, employment may fluctuate from year to year with construction activity or with mapping needs for land and resource management. ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM Students should maintain contact with the program coordinator and academic advisors at CCBC–Catonsville to monitor their progress. STATEWIDE PROGRAM: As stated in CCBC’s 2011-2012 college catalog, CCBC has chosen to provide students who are out-of-county, Maryland residents enrolled in this Statewide Program a discount of 50% of the out-ofcounty differential at the time of registration, instead of requiring students to pay in full and receive a subsequent reimbursement.
