HCC offers core courses to prepare students for transfer to CCBC– Dundalk to complete the degree program. CCBC–Dundalk awards the Associate of Applied Sciences Degree upon successful completion of the program. Duties may include interviewing patients, conducting group or individual counseling sessions, maintaining case records and presenting educational material to patients. Substance abuse counselors work in hospitals, schools, mental health centers and rehabilitation clinics. Hours vary, and counselors may be scheduled for “on-call” duty on weekends and holidays. Certification for chemical dependency counselors is required by the State of Maryland. The credentialing process includes a combination of a college degree in a health or human services counseling field; course work specific to chemical dependency counseling; hours of supervised counseling experience; and passing a state-approved examination. Both the degree requirement and specific alcohol and drug course work are met by the completion of this degree. ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM Students should maintain contact with CCBC–Dundalk to monitor their progress and suitability for enrollment in the Chemical Dependency Counseling program upon completion of courses taken at HCC. As stated in CCBC’s 2011-2012 college catalog, CCBC has chosen to provide students who are out-of-county, Maryland residents enrolled in this Health Workforce Shortage Program a discount of 50% of the out-of-county differential at the time of registration, instead of requiring students to pay in full and receive a subsequent reimbursement.
