EDUC 490, 491, 492 (2 or 4 units)
DIRECTED STUDY OUTLINE
Directed Study courses (Education 490, 491 and 492) (specify 2 or 4 units) are available for students completing
upper division course work in areas of educational study, where the faculty does not offer a regular course.
Applicants must have completed 60 units, consent of the supervising faculty member and approval of the director of
undergraduate programs. (A current unofficial SFU advising transcript must be attached to the proposal.) A student,
or a small group of students, may pursue work in a Directed Study course under the direction of a faculty member in
Education.
Please note that each course number may be completed only ONCE. A maximum of three directed study courses
will be approved for any student within the requirements for the BGS (EDUC) or B.Ed. Degree.

The initiative for a Directed Study course comes from the student. The student identifies a member of the
faculty who has expertise in the area of the proposed study.
The student submits an initial proposal to the faculty member and then discusses the proposal to confirm
the academic quality of the Directed Study, as well as to ensure the proposed study does not duplicate the
content of a calendar course.
The student and the faculty member reach agreement and together draft a final proposal on the attached
form, which must include the faculty supervisor's signature.
The student submits the signed proposal to the Director, Undergraduate Programs, Faculty of Education via
EDUC Undergraduate Programs office (educuga@sfu.ca). Proposals will be accepted one month before the
start of the semester and up to the end of the first week of classes in the relevant semester. No late
proposals will be considered.
Written notification of approval/denial will be forwarded to the student from Undergraduate Programs.
Upon receipt of approval, the student will be registered for the Directed Study course.

A one-page summary of the work carried out under the Directed Study will be submitted by the student to
their supervisor prior to the final assessment of the course.
The Supervisor submits the Directed Study Summary and the course grade to the Undergraduate Programs
Office. This summary will be kept on file for future reference. Directed Studies are kept on file for five
years.
