The Siemens transformer factory in Jundiaí in the Brazilian
federal state of São Paulo supplied the last of a total of
64 transformers for the extensive Jirau Hydroelectric –
Rio Madeira Project to its customer Energia Sustentável
do Brasil (ESBR) on time. The project, which has been
in progress since 2009, comprised 14 340 MVA–525kV
step-up transformers, 27 auxiliary oil-immersed transformers, plus 24 auxiliary dry-type transformers. One
of the key challenges was the transport of the step-up
transformers to Porto Velho in the northern Brazilian
Amazon region.
All of the transformers were shipped disassembled. Accessories and oil were transported on highways, while the
tank – the heaviest part of the transformer, weighing
some 180 tons – was transported in five steps by truck,
ship, and barge. »In order to transport the transformers,
several moves were required, and each was considered a
risky operation. This meant more planning effort. It took
up to 150 days to transport a transformer, though, as
ship, barge, and road permits had to be available at the
same time in order to ensure that all moves went hand in
hand,« explains Project Manager Ana Priscilla P. Siqueira,
who adds: »Despite the adversities, the transformers were
supplied on time, according to the customer’s needs.«

Ten transformers for New Jersey, Ohio,
and Pennsylvania
In the meantime, the Siemens transformer factory in
Jundiaí has also manufactured and delivered an 870-MVA
three-phase autotransformer to First Energy, one of the
largest investor-owned utilities in the United States. The
transformer, earmarked to enhance the existing 500 kV
network in the states of New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsyl
vania, was produced in the record time of only 150 days.
The delivery of the transformer underlines the close
relationship between Siemens and First Energy, which
has already been continued with a new order for the engineering, production, testing, and logistics activities
for three more transformers. All of the units are being
designed and produced in Jundiaí in close cooperation
with the Siemens Global Technology Center (GTC). The
cooperation between the Siemens transformer factory
network and the GTC ensures delivery of the most stateof-the-art and cost-efficient technologies. »The investment proves Siemens’ – and especially the Jundiaí
plant’s – capacity for producing and exporting technology.
Over the last three years, almost 50 percent of the large
power transformers exported from Brazil to the United
States were produced at our Jundiaí plant,« say engineers
Fabiana Pileggi and Felipe Estácio from Siemens Brazil.
